Snippet - “Howell…”
“I know, I know, don’t give her an opening.”
“I just hope Robert isn’t looking for the traditional type. You two are sort of intimidating,” Dan muttered.
“Really? I didn’t think that,” Howell said.
“Because you’re hellaciously handsome,” Dan replied. “Gives you confidence.”
Howell cocked his head to the side. “And you think you’re not?”
Dan stared at his feet. “I’m not, not really.”
“You are,” Al assured him as she often did. “It’s just that you’re…”
“A little too Asian for here,” Grace supplied.
“Did notice there weren’t a whole lot of Asians around,” Howell said.
“This is area is heavy on Italians, Germans, and eastern Europeans,” Al said. “Pittsburgh is much the same though with a good sized Black population.”
“And then you have someone like me,” Grace said. “My dad was like Dan, half white, half Chinese and mom is Black. I’m a little of everything and people get so rude asking you ‘what are you exactly’ like that should matter that much to them that they have to ask a stranger that.”
“Definitely rude and since I’m Filipino I have the darker skin so everyone just thinks I’m an Indian and I get a thousand and one Geronimo jokes.” Dan rolled his eyes. “Putting that aside, I think it should be okay because honestly I’m not sure Robert’s met a girl he didn’t think he could score with and he’s not much less sleazy about it than Tony is. He just doesn’t have the confidence Tony has in himself so it’s less…apparent.”
