To my friends who celebrate

I spent it alone by choice. I know that might change in the future but honestly it's not that meaningful of a day to me because it was too rooted in work and drama throughout my life and I go home for like 3 weeks in two weeks so there is no sense in driving 500 miles around trip for a couple days where I'm grading things, nanoing things and prepping for finals.

I made a couple new to me things today one of which was the Native American dish, Nasaump see recipe here. I knew this might be rough as I don't like the texture of polenta (which is what I used) or grits, this wasn't that bad. I also had a different site talking about spreading leftover nasaump on a platter, cutting it and frying it. I did that as an appetizer for dinner...and hated it. ha.

I also tried a new to me soup pumpkin-sweet potato soup, not quite the recipe but close which has apples and carrots too. Somehow this made three times the soup I had envisioned as if the box of stock tripled itself. I will say I really amped up the spices. I wanted to TASTE the spice, not have it whispered in. Also I do have an immersion blender so...

the full menu was Spiced Pumpkin and Sweet Potato Soup, fried nasaump as an app and the dinner is roasted turkey with gravy, turkey skin chicharrones, roasted brussel sprouts and cranberries with a fig balsemic glaze and purple sweet potatoes with an orange peel-cinnamon spiced chestnut honey and stuffing muffins and everything was great except the sprouts. they were god awful and went in the trash. I think the onions were the issue. They were pre-diced that I picked up in Krogers and a) it almost stewed instead of roasting since it was wet and b) they tasted borderline bad. Ah well.

Also there was skyr cheesecake for dessert (simple truth from Krogers)

I got a lot written on my my nano and then...everything but the ctrl button stopped working on my ancient desk top's keyboard and the mouse had issues all day. I KNOW I will have to replace both my computers (sorry, it's just easier for me to use desk tops but I need a laptop for work and forget me using my phone as a substitute. My eyesight is not good enough for that not to mention the nerve damaged hands) I turned it off and I hope it boots up right tomorrow. Sigh.

You know Direct tv is offering up 60 premium channels as a preview for the holidays (HBO, Showtime, Epix and a something else) and ...almost nothing on any of it. However I did run across the new Criminal Minds. I had forgotten about it. I'm like why are you recording it? It had it's day. Finally sitting down to some of those Haunted Scotland's I've recorded and sitting here hoping my chest loosens up. The last couple years I've been having bouts of chest tightness which is why I was seeing a cardiologist but it's not my heart. I think it's anxiety to be honest. Sigh.

And for the thursday community promo how about [community profile] inkingitout for the writers out there. It's a low pressure accountability site that I need to remember to sign back up for.

Snippet - Robert let out another of his derisive sniffs. “You know anything about magic?”

“I do. Wales is filled with magic,” Howell said, rapping his knuckles to his chest. “I lived a time in Caerfyrddin, what the English speakers call Carmarthen. In Welsh it means Merlin’s Fort as Myrddin is how we say Merlin. He’s from Wales you know.”

“I thought he was from England,” Kelly leaned on the table, staring at Howell, utterly ignoring Chuck who she had arrived with.

Howell huffed. “That’s what they’d like you to think. No, Merlin was born near Dinas Emyrs some say or at the very least , as a boy, he helped King Vortigern build his castle which would not stand because the ground was forever shaking. There were two dragons, you see, under the ground in a subterranean lake, the white and the red dragon. Merlin proved you couldn’t build over that lake and the red dragon eventually won the fight.”

“Wait, is that why there’s a red dragon on the Welsh flag.” Summer poked a finger into Howell’s chest right into the dragon’s head.

“Ydy. This is Y Ddraig Goch.”

“Hush now and roll up your stats.” Dan widened hies eyes at him. His mother had always talked about the Irish gift of gab. Maybe Howell had some in him or it extended into Wales.

“Dan, let the man talk.” Summer reached across Howell and punched Dan’s arms.

“If I do, we’ll be here all night and no one will have played a thing.”
