Independence Drabbles

Giles’ little band of friends – 1970’s  - Key Party
 
Deirdre wiggled in his lap, as Ripper took a toke from the bong Ethan offered him. “Ripper, let’s go to your room.”
 
“No, no. Who’s key did you get? The whole idea is to go home with someone who you aren’t already shagging,” Ethan said, pointing to the now-empty bowl; the centerpiece of their key party.
 
Deirdre peered at the set of keys. “I think they’re yours.”
 
“Have fun,” Ripper said, looking at the gorgeous red-head who had his keys. Finally free from the morals of his father and the boredom of being a Watcher, Giles reveled in his life.

 

Joyce – S 1 Fresh Beginnings
 
Joyce surveyed the boxes stacked up in her new home. The idea of unpacking them all was amazing daunting. Who knew she had so much junk, the accumulation of living a nice life? But it was worth it, she reminded herself. Buffy was away from the bad element in L.A. that lured her into misdemeanors and worse. Her daughter was lucky not to do jail time for burning down the gym.

 

And it was a new start for her, away from Hank. That was a little scary but she had a stimulating new job. This was independence from the past.
 

 

Lindsey S 2 – All New Man
 
Lindsey whiled away the miles thinking about what he would do to Angel for putting the ‘cops suck’ sign on his truck. Each new torture brought a smile to his face, even though he knew he would never try any of them. He was free. No more Wolfram and Hart, no more contracts that made his soul feel like it had been rolled in manure, no more vampires with souls.
 
He was going to be an all-new man. Maybe he’d head to Nashville with his guitar and try to make his big break into country music. It was his Independence Day.

 

Tara – S4  College Days
 
Tara looked around Sunnydale’s campus, breathing in the warm summer air. College was going to be everything she hoped for, she knew that deep down. She was ready to become her own woman, a woman her mother would be proud of. Thoughts of her father tried to trickle into her mind, and even though she felt traitorous, Tara shut them out. She reminded herself that her male kin did their level best to make her docile and obedient, the perfect house frau. She wanted more and the buildings surrounding her symbolized her independence. She’d make the most of it.
 

Spike/Dru  S5 Prisoner
 
Spike held her tight as they danced. Her perfume took him back to more carefree days, leaving him shaking with longing for them. His dark princess, could she really cure him of the technology knifing into his brain? Drusilla could be his passport out of this place and freedom from what he was feeling for the Slayer. He needed to escape before he was lost.
 
Watching Drusilla catch their prey for him, Spike realized with heavy heart there was no freedom for him. Beholden to Dru for food or subverting himself to be with Buffy, he couldn’t win either way.
 
 

Connor – Post NFA – Pyrotechnics
Connor had to remind himself that this was only his second real Fourth of July at the Reilly lakefront house, no matter that he remembered coming here all his life. Cool water splashing on his legs as he blasted along the lake on his Skidoo, Connor daydreamed of grilled chicken, cold beer and the illegal but spectacular fireworks display his neighbors put on. He felt so much at home here. Only one thing was missing: Angel. Maybe he should have invited him along as a ‘friend.’ Fun in the sun was out but surely his dad would have liked the pyrotechnics.

 

Connor/Angel – Post NFA College Bound
 
It was so hard to let him go but boys needed their independence. Still healing from the narrow victory over Black Thorn, Angel watched Connor packing up to go back to college. This was the life he wanted for his son, higher education, frat parties and girls, the type of fun Connor should be having. Still, every time he looked at Connor, he started misting up.
 
Connor put his Scooby-Doo boxers in the suitcase. “Can’t believe Dad believed you were a friend from school.”
 
Angel smiled. “I look young enough. I’m going to miss you when you go.”
 
“Me, too.”

 

 

Connor/Dawn – Red, White and Romance
 
Dawn lay back on the blanket, looking up at the blazing star of a firework. She cuddled up to Connor. “Maybe we should tell them we’re dating.”
 
Connor winced as a screaming firework shot up, hurting his sensitive ears. “I’m all for everyone knowing that I love you.” He kissed her quickly.
 
Dawn smiled under his lips. She knew Buffy thought she was too young to be dating seriously but she didn’t care. No one had made her feel special like Connor did. She  didn’t think Buffy would like her dating Angel’s son. Tell or no, she was ready to be independent.
