I went to the renn fest today. At the risk of sounding like a grumpy old woman, I liked it a little better before geeky stuff became 'cool.' I've been going to this festival off and on since 1996. I have NEVER see it like this. It took me an hour and forty minutes to get from the highway to the parking lot. It's SEVEN miles. I read 100 pages of my book sitting on the road waiting in line. God the people who live there must hate this thing at this point. I get there and the handicapped lot is filled. I can walk pretty good in spite of the amount of arthritis I have but still maybe you need MORE handicapped people. I should have had FIVE hours at the festival. By the time I was through the gate I was down to about 3 and a half.

Can you predict my mood by the time I got inside? If not go ask [personal profile] evil_little_dog how much patience I have for waiting in line. It was SO crowded, you could barely move. You couldn't see the shows as there was no where to sit and the food lines were averaging an hour or more to get through. Guess what I had for lunch, a giant pickle and a corn dog which I found on the far side of the fair where there wasn't much of a line. I don't even like corndogs but I was much more willing to eat that than wait in line for another fucking hour.

I never DID find the damn band I was there to see (It was highlander days, so Scottish bands). Most of my favorite crafters are now gone/retired mostly. But I did still have a few I always buy from and I did get a few things. It was so crowded you could barely get near the vendors. I had planned on maybe splurging on the boots but after some thought I did not. I have things I want more (and if I lived closer I'd consider being their vendor because I could use my podiatry skills in making the casts for the boots).

What was good was I found out there is a Celtic festival one weekend in May. If I'm in OH then I might go. One of my biggest disappointments from my DNA was finding out that the red hair in the family wasn't from Ireland (probably the French/Austrian 1% or one of those Neanderthal genes) but I still have such an affinity for Celtic art. (And for Ireland as this summer proved).

I ended up passing on the henna tattoo because of how long it would take (it would put me there at closing and the last time that happened it took me 2 hours to get back ot the highway). I got some fudge, spicy chocolate and Guinness. I haven't tasted either yet.

I got a wire wrapped piece of sodalite from the The Queen’s Keypsakes. She's one of my go-tos. And a group I've bought from for years and years is The Uncommon Adornments. I got phoenix earrings with amber beads. Honestly I was on the fence. I got them in gold which I don't usually do between expense and gold is something I'm allergic to (the hooks aren't gold) I looked for them in silver and they were boring. I don't like yellow other than amber so I looked for another gem but nope. Nothing looked as good as yellow and gold because it's a phoenix!.

New to me was Dayton Celtic. All the stuff was in pewter but gorgeous. Really unique takes on some standard Celtic art. I got, wait for it, another tree of life. OMG how many do I have? Oddly enough the stuff on his website appears to be silver and MUCH more money (still lovely). I'd buy more. It's on a horrible chain though, one of those beaded metal ones with the keychain sort of clasp. I need to get it off of there and design it a better place to hang.

I ran across three of my steampunk friends there too. That was fun. THey were as grumpy as I am over the insane waits. I was so dehydrated (I don't like peeing in the portapotties because of the long gown) that I drank two 16 oz bottles in 10 minutes then another 44 ounces of tea that didn't last 40 miles. Yikes.

If I go again I might go to Cincinnati the night before or get up early here and be there at 10 when the doors open. I will provide pictures of the goodies later but I'm too damn tired now
