Still feeling blah
Feb. 11th, 2020 10:21 pmMostly because I had to spend the entire evening grading and I still have another class yet to go but it's nearly 10:30pm and I am DONE. I didn't sleep well last night either, no reason. Just wasn't tired which was annoying.
I feel like a jerk because I had to put off the head of the Madog Society about my research presentation. It can not be in a few weeks. Sorry. I have no idea how I'm going to get to this. I just don't know.
I hate to say it, I'm kinda glad the MacGyver reboot is back but only because I like looking at Lucas Till (and I don't normally go for blonds)
So after much thought I'm still very unhappy with the last third of last night's Prodigal Son and here's why.
1. As far as I'm concerned they made a serious story telling error by having our whiny-assed villain kill the second hostage. Jessica spills a million dollars on the ground and he still kills the hostage in spite of her compliance. so why in the name of god would she EVER believe he won't kill the next hostage. I can't wrap my head around that. Jess has to be a complete idiot to fall for this and she's not a stupid woman. If he had spared the hostage and built trust then I could see her going along with this. SHe would have reason to believe if she shivved Martin she would save the other woman but the way it played out she would have to believe nothing she did matter. So why in the hell did she not tell Malcolm or Gil?
2. And then there's the whole thing with Martin. He admitted to it why? He realizes that he has to sacrifice himself? He's not capable of that but he seems to be doing it to piss off Malcolm enough and he gives him the clue, do it like this and I might survive. What?!? Okay so no one still thinks to fake any of this? Let's not even get me started on the idea that a high security facility for the criminally insane doesn't have cameras? But why not USE this and pretend to rush Martin to the hospital? For that matter most people have no idea exactly where the heart is in the chest. Most think it's where you put your hand during the pledge. Hint, it's not. There is no reason to assume that Jess knows where to stab. There's no reason to know our villain has a clue. So why not just stab him higher into a lung or something? To put it this way, the heart is the size of your fist. Put your fist on your chest. Can you see how easy it is to MISS your heart? Oh sure you might end up in a major vessel that will still kill you. Malcolm knows what he's doing and Martin sure as hell does. There is literally no reason for the knife to hit the heart other than to create drama it hasn't earned. Also if you compare scenes, Malcolm and Martin are stabbed nearly in the same spot (how can I tell? Watch their elbows in both stabbing scenes, the knife is approximately in the antecubital fossa area, the middle of the elbow) So in one scene it hit nothing major (which again I call bull, it had to have hit Malcolm's spleen and stomach which is why he was in the hospital for weeks otherwise he wouldn't have been kept in the hospital. That's not how they work).
3. Sorry but it takes more than grabbing scrubs to get into an OR. Did you see Doctor Strange? That's fairly close to a real OR. There are surgical teams. You generally know all your OR nurses and techs. You don't have random people wandering around. The villain isn't medical personnel. The surgeon would have been who the hell is this man who doesn't know the first thing about maintaining sterile fields (there is something more than just standing around, it's complicated). Maybe he could be outside loitering but in the OR? I eye rolled so hard I nearly hurt myself. And for that matter, I keep wondering where all these ORs with observatory rooms are at. I've operated in hospitals in OH, PA, NY, AZ, WI, and SD and I've yet to see anyone like that. I know they used to exist but.... that didn't anger me but it always bugs me.
4. This sets us up for ugly consequences which again feels like unearned drama. Jessica can take the blame all she wants but a little compound Nile blue in water (converting it to compound Nile red which is kinda toxic) will lift the fingerprints from the non-porous ceramic knife and then what? He'll have to explain that so either he stabbed dad or he had the knife at one point so why did he give it back to Mom so she could stab. How can Gil, Dani and JT trust Malcolm at this point because you'd have to be an idiot to believe a man who has killed twice especially when you've already worked out WHO it is and DID NOT CALL IT IN. How can Gil possibly spin this so Malcolm can remain employed? Or does everyone become complicit in the crime and let Jess take the fall with the idea she was coerced and maybe not fully responsible?
4. Where the hell did her police escort go? Why wasn't she put in a safe house? none of this made sense to me.
Yeah I hated this ending
ETA - my mom hated it more than me. Yikes
