I'm having fun with these writing prompts (not that I've ever written one yet but who knows. I can definitely see me using this one)

Almost every book I've written, I've written 20 minutes at a time. Small bursts of focus, with space between. Sometimes in those bursts, I write, and sometimes I stare out windows, but the fact is, you can make big things over small moments.

Thank gods you can make big things over small bursts, or I'm not sure I'd be writing anything these days. Menopause brain is REAL, and I hates it, my precious.

I wrote 660 words on the Bond/Q fic before we went off for a walk in the park, a visit to the zoo, dinner, and then some grocery shopping. Trying to be prepared for back-to-work tomorrow. *sighs*

That is a very helpful comment from VE Schwab. Bit under two pages longhand today and then I went back and did about 45 mins of typing up. Still behind on that but it just means if I have a day where I really don't know what to write I will still have something writing-related to do.

A significant chunk of editing, plus 2400 new words. Also, I have achieved the story's climax! Fuck knows what I'll do for a denouement, but that's tomorrow's problem.

And absolutely, you can get a substantial body of work done, working twenty minutes at a time. That's how I filled my last seventy-page notebook, and it's absolutely how I'm filling this one.

I absolutely agree (though recently I've seen people being denigrated for not churning out 4K a day and writing 5 hours at a time as if that's feasible for all).

And huzzah for getting the climax down. Good luck with the denouement.

Oh, good lord. I hate it when people give out writing "advice" as if what works for them is the only thing that works.

Find a thing that works for you, and then work it. If that's five hours a day, good for you, and I'm glad you found a way to get your bills paid. If that's twenty minutes at a time, good for you, you keep on keeping on, and you'll get that sucker finished eventually.

Exactly. There is no one size fits all. You find what is your thing. Even the idea of write every day can be too much pressure for some.

Earlier in the week there was one young author who was thrown out of her local group because she couldn't churn out 15K a week so 'she wasn't a real author, she was a hobbyist.' I saw at least three Nebula nominated authors rally around her to tell her she's doing things just fine her way (This quote might have come out of that now that I think about it)

I'm glad people rallied around!

If a writing group wants to make 15K/week a condition of admission, they can do that -- everyone gets to decide what they want from their group, and make/find/create a group that can meet their goals, as best as they can -- but this "real author" business can go jump in the lake.

Exactly right. I got that the group decided this after the fact which isn't right or at least not the right group for her.

Ugh. Yeah, it's better to be up front about expectations. Or at the very least not be asshats if you're having to work out expectations on the fly. Altogether, though, it sounds like a lot more ugly than really needed to happen.
