I had thinks to say but honestly I'm annoyed about everything but mostly with my apartment. Today was gorgeous out, grey yes but I like that and only 70. I was hotter in my place than outside. opening the windows somehow made it hotter. I had to give it up.

I'm disappointed in fandoms (most the intolerance in the Star Trek fandom right now because if ANY who that was open and tolerant of all diversity, it's that one. Hell the Vulcan motto is Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combination (IDIC) and we have 1001 asshats, pissed there are black women captain, Asians, gays, you know name it. Someone is actually arguing there was no sex on Star Trek and that's all it is now. Um....I'm pretty sure there was a social worker specifically to deal with all Kirk's kids). And GRRM did not help matters by being what he is: an old white man who can't even be bothered to use the phonetic cue cards to pronounce the names of the not-white-men who won the Hugos in spite of this being recorded and he could have tried til he got it right so now there's 1001 hurt feelings (Yes I know it's hard. I have to do t his every semester)

So I guess that's my writerly ways. There is the whole IDIC out there, respect it. Having diversity is not necessarily virtue signaling. Representation matters. While I'm on Star Trek, let me say what it meant to me to see Dr. Crusher and Dr. Pulaski on ST:TNG. You didn't see women doctors. I got to see my dream on screen. A few years later my med school was less than 25% women in my class. We were told women had no place there. Seeing those women on screen helped. It meant something to me so how can I possibly deny others representation? I cannot.

Wait what? There was no sex in Star Trek? People actually say that? Sure it wasn't explicit but it was certainly implied. To the point that it's a running joke in my family about how Riker on TNG and Kirk were both extremely promiscuous. Sure Riker settled down and all but not Kirk. Sorry fandom is sucking right now for you. I think this is why I stay on the fringes.

I'm on the fringes but you can't avoid it on twitter unfortunately and yes people said that. Kirk, Riker and for that matter Troi's Mom were all sexually active. Not to mention Orion slave girls, Risa the pleasure planet, Pon Farr and any number of situations. Fans are weird

For what it's worth, GRRM says he wasn't issued with all the pronunciations, that he had planned to ask the nominees for their pronunciations if this had been a RL event, and that he apologized for the mispronunciations.

I think he just didn't do basic homework for a presenter. However, I'm inclined to reserve the greatest blame to the con organizers, who didn't ask him to redo those segments. Letting loose GRRM in a video presentation without supervision is like letting loose Heinlein without an editor.

Interesting because that's counter to all the criticism I've seen where they were sure he had the pronounciation cards (which could be wrong of course) but yes someone should have asked him to redo it

He says in his comment that the pronunciation of some of the names was written on the awards envelopes he was given. I still think it was his responsibility to have learned all the pronunciations beforehand. Mary Robinette Kowal offered a polite but cutting response to all this.

Oh thanks for that. Wish it were that easy with student names. I generally start the role on day one with I'm likely to butcher your name. Don't be shy, tell me if I'm wrong and how to say it correctly.
