Writerly Ways
Sep. 5th, 2021 09:59 pmBefore I get into the writing post here's today's fuckery I was nearly hit twice by the same vehicle 10 miles apart. He forced me off the highway getting onto it and then realized he missed his exit and nearly slammed into me on the exit ramp.
Last night my brain pulled it's usual delightful, 'here's the best idea/line/scene' right before you fall asleep and naturally I didn't get up to write it down. I remember about half of it (which is about half more than usual) so what do YOU do when your brain serves up a great tidbit just before bed/in the shower/behind the wheel?
I did try the tablet on the bed stand but my sleepy brain and bad handwriting made that less than helpful. I tried the recorder in the car but once I did that my brain offered up nothing in the car until I took the recorder out (My brain is a dick). I'm curious to other ways of trying to deal with this so good ideas aren't lose to the ether.

Date: 2021-09-06 02:53 pm (UTC)When I get such an idea and can't write it down, I sometimes record in on my phone, or I make a kind of silent song out of the key words I sing to myself until I am able to note it down in any way. When it prevents me from sleeping I rather get up to write it down, and keep a notebook at my bedside for this. What no longer works for me but did for a long time was a kind of "mind palace" thing where I had an architectural structure I used to "place" things I needed to remember. My structure was a medieval cloister, and I could put down info at every pillar of it, specified by the compass points. But this no longer works since I have memory issues, perhaps because I don't use it often enough anymore. OTOH I usually have my phone at hand and can do an audio recording which is now my go-to method when I can't write anything down.

The brain actually learns very well when things are in song, points to my child hood with all the School House ROcks things in the Saturday Morning cartoon line up. I can still recite the preamble to the Constitution but only if I sing it
