This one is seriously falling apart. I head for the doctors for my every third month appointment (the joys of being diabetic). I realize that I've lost my health insurance card. Last I saw it was three months ago when I had to scream at them for mishandling my medication. NO CLUE where it went since I usually replace it in my wallet. Sigh. The doctor's office makes me a copy.

Now I've had a fever and nausea with eating for about a week. I get these fevers and nausea every so often but since I'm in a bout of it, I mention it.

His eyes light up. OOOO even more is wrong with Dr. Evans let me do the happy dance of racking up more medical bills. He asks about my gall bladder because it sounds like that to him. I say no this isn't the searing pain I get when I eat something fatty/fried. THAT'S gall bladder pain. This could be too says he. Hmmm,he's not wrong. It does fit but I've been eating good. Sigh. Well I confess to Mom, her siblings, her dad and his siblings ALL having to have that damn organ removed. My aunt even died of gangrene of the gallbladder.

So I leave his office head straight to get bloodwork (After another fight with his moron nurse who WONT get him to write me a script for my diabetic medicine and he's already disappeared. She insists my pharmacy needs to fax a request. WHY I whine since I'm standing right here but she's adamant. Fuck her, I'll let Walgreens yell at her for the inconvience. At least Walgreens was amused by this idiot nurse) So I get my blood draw to make sure I don't have a blood borne infection and to check my amylase and various other gallbladder tests.

I go tomorrow for that ultrasound to make sure my gallbladder isn't the size of a grapefruit or something. If it's enlarged guess who gets cut open again. I'm gonna be hollow by the time I die. At least this is just three tiny holes just enough to shove a camera and a grabby claw into me.

On a totally unrelated note, I cut off all my hair. Serious. It's only about two inches long now.

Still on hold with BC/BS waiting to beg for a new insurance card

I got lucky in that respect. I lost the damn insurance card and had to bluff my way through with a copy of a copy

Yeah that is pretty lucky. Mind you, she did give me a withering glare when I told her I didn't have my Care Card on me. (that's what we use for our medical.)

Around here usually you don't GET care without that card (too much fraud) unless it's an emergency so it was lucky. I just put on the Dr. Evans act and usually I get slightly more respect than a non-medical schlub

That's good... well up here we do get service with or without that card, because its easy enough to follow up on it. Either you've paid into it or you haven't, but it's easy enough to find out because it's thru the government.
But some nurses act like it's the most vital thing. I've never heard of Care Card fraud so its not a big thing up here.

Oh I'm sure there's fraud but maybe you all aren't as creative as we are down here. Mostly I treated a ton of Canadians who were too disgusted by national health to wait the ridiculous times expected and just paid American doctors cash. (well when I was in NY at any rate and it was a quick jog across the border)

Yeah I can see that but in places like Toronto... which is huge, I can see people just going down to the states. Then again I also don't know how bad medical is in Toronto. It's province by province, rather than the whole country. National gov't gives some degree of funding but the rest of it is up to the Provincial gov't.

When it comes to Fraud, we have more welfare fraud than medical fraud. Or I should say more publicized cases of welfare fraud. As well, in BC we have to worry more about the doctors, nurses and/or health care workers going on strike more than anything else.

We have plenty of welfare fraud too. I think it depends on WHERE in Canada you live. I have friends who adore national health and others who despise it. I think the bigger cities have more problems which only makes sense

I think Vancouver is in between a small city & a big city. We're the third biggest city in Canada, yet we still see ourselves as really small, especially in comparison to Toronto.
But for the most part I can't complain about our health care system.

That's good. I could complain for days from both the doctor's and the patient's pov about ours

I don't blame you. I have a great aunt in Florida and what she tells me, just makes my mum and I want her to move back home to Canada.

FLORIDA sucks big time. I never practiced here, never wanted to. Malpractice insurance alone can bankrupt the doctor. IT's so hard to see a doctor I can't even tellyou. I don't dare miss my appts.

Ok that's bad... i've had to miss appointments and have never had a problem with rescheduling.

What's wrong with Florida, does it have anything to do with the number of retirees there?

That's part of the problem. The real trouble however is the cost of licensing (which varies state to state as does malpractice) is higher and malpractice is MUCH higher. Too many frivolous (and not) lawsuits
