Writerly Ways
Jan. 2nd, 2022 08:10 pmSo what to talk about? How believable an absent minded character is, like one who always calls in their pills a week early until the last week of Dec when it really counted and ran out and now owes 300$ she didn't need to pay? (Yeah go me) How about a character selfish enough to turn on a half watched video everyone in the house is watching while the others are working and then doesn't rewind it and deletes it from the DVR? How about using a rich setting without describing it? (no that's another post)
Let's talk about whirlwind romances. Do you think they're effective? Like them? Hate them? Honestly I have only know a few true whirlwinds and none of them lasted except one (but even that was contentious) For me it makes me wonder about the decision making process of the characters. Example: I just read a book (a mystery NOT a romance where I might be more forgiving) where the two characters meet in ch 1. In ch 2 she's googling him and then about 3-4 months go by (in which he is gone for at least a month of that with his job) in ch 30 he proposes. Next chapter he's bought a house for them (in spite of her having one) moving her away from her friends/work across the strait and she's married by the end. ALL her friends and townspeople are like we're so happy for you. We knew this was a special relationship. Not a single soul questioned it.
So I thought to myself is this believable. Dear friends know this if you tell me you're marrying someone you've known for as many days as you have fingers and toes I'm going to ask WTF is wrong with you? I just don't think it's a great idea. People usually need time to figure out capatibility. Maybe your mileage varies with this. I will say I saw nothing in the story to make me feel their love story either. It took away my desire to see more of this. I feel like I can't trust her. While I know its a YMMV situation I am curious what you think.
