Old fandoms
Jul. 8th, 2022 07:35 pmFETV shows ancient shows and they started playing Emergency! For my entire life I thought it was Emergency 51 so I was shocked to learn it was wrong.
Anyhow Johnny Gage (Randolph Mantooth) was one of my first fandom crushes. (right after Spock and Sulu). I haven't seen this show since high school or maybe even junior high. Now I was apprehensive about watching it. It was filmed in the 1970s and it's a first responder/medical show. Now that I went through med school I find medical shows mostly unwatchable.
I decided what could it possibly hurt? If it sucks delete it. Of course if it sucks it might take my former joy. that's what it could hurt.
Shockingly it didn't suck. It's actually quite good for it's time. For one, it was rather progressive with an African American doctor, a Latinx firefighter, technically a Native American one in Johnny (though as far as I can remember it's never mentioned that he's Native) and a middle-aged woman calling a lot of the shots in Dixie. They never talk down to her because she's just a woman or a nurse (or at least not in the dozen or so I've watched from 1973) and that's saying something because 20 years to the year after these aired I was a resident in a hospital and they DID talk down to me because I was a woman.
It's been fun remembering Roy and Johnny (I didn't remember Johnny was a little well not dumb but not the sharpest knife in the drawer and walks around with his mouth half open all the time)
So do you have an old fandom you'd like to revisit or are you nervous too?

Date: 2022-07-09 03:08 am (UTC)glad you enjoyed the story. Brumeier writes a lot but i'm not sure I've seen a lot of Sentinel fic from them

Date: 2022-07-09 04:10 am (UTC)I've probably read some of Brumeier's Sentinel fic years ago, since I was very big into TS at one time. I haven't had any time to read more, but there are over 60 which is quite a lot, to me.

Date: 2022-07-09 11:57 am (UTC)If it was on NBC in the 70s - early 80s, I probably watched it. (That was the only channel we got, even with an antennae.) BJ and the Bear is something I also remember fondly. I had a crush on Greg Evigan, ngl. *g*
ETA: Also meant to say thanks for the rec!

BJ & the bear, I watched that too. Greg was cute. I have a feeling that one might not hold up any more but I'd look at it and see
