Writerly Ways
Dec. 5th, 2022 10:01 pmWell I lost most of this evening grading (I'm not done but I AM done for tonight) and removing spam comments in AO3 and regretfully turning those stories to registered users only vs registered + guests. sigh.
SOOO as you know I do the Popsugar reading challenge yearly (anyone know a book that started as fanfic that ISNT based on frakking Twilight/50 Shades and not written by Cassandra Clare?) So a plus sized protagonist romance is going to be tough for me to find so I've been googling it and I found what I want to talk about today.
The publishing companies need to DO. BETTER. with the cover art. I was going to post individual books but points up to those problems. I have learned that yes there are quite a few of these in the het realm (I know of a few in the LGBT too) but have a look at the cover art here. two have real people on it that are curvy the rest are the typical beefcake/waif romance covers. Most of the ones with real overweight characters are drawn as if it's too much to put actual people on the cover with a weight issue. (I'm still shocked the prompt didn't say plus sized and came out with the word fat)
Don't believe me here's more (with some repeats) still drawn or no humans on the cover at all and that's rare for romances
Non-romances do a little better with it as you can see here. Hmmm I wonder if that lesbian vampire slayer book in vegas has a romantic subplot because I'd totally count it.
I get it. There is still that fat people aren't sexy mind set out there. I get that they're afraid if they put plus size characters on the cover they won't sell. Worse, they might be right and that is disappointing.

Day 5 tea
Adagio - rooibos pecan turtle - you already know my thoughts on rooibos in general. If you're going to feed it to me , hide it. They did an admirable job of it. There is a strong caramel-pecan flavor. It's meant to have chocolate and cinnamon (and apple pieces) but those flavors are muted which isn't bad. chocolate is often awful IMO. This was pretty tasty though
Yawn Brew - Candy Cane Popcorn. I feel like the judges of Guy's Grocery Games or Chopped. If you name something you set up expectations. Candy Canes evoke mint (yes there are other flavors but do you think of those first?) There is no mint in this. It's apple pieces (again), safflower, white chamomile (which I shouldn't have) and in theory Popcorn. I looked for popcorn in the bag and didn't see it (but I waited until after so maybe it was mush).
I'm very familiar with genmaicha which is brown rice/popcorn tea. It's usually green. It has a distinct taste. There was none of that in this. I thought maybe it was because it was black tea or the popcorn was whispered in. It was a pleasant tea but it didn't live up to its name.

Date: 2022-12-06 04:20 am (UTC)Everina Maxwell's "Winter's Orbit" - came out last year and I really enjoyed it! It was originally posted on ao3 - I guess it depends on what they define as fanfic - it was original fic, posted on a mostly-fanfic platform originally?
If you need a real fanfic - apparently Anna Todd's "After" was original a one-direction rp fanfic, rewritten as original fiction and published. It sounds *awful* though, LOL young adult romance novel that combines the emotionality of hate-romance and the strive to love a person with cold affection and a haunted past.

Date: 2022-12-06 07:01 am (UTC)Homecoming by Anne B. Walsh started life as fanfic of (her AU of) Harry Potter, and A Widow in Waiting by the same author kinda still is fanfic of Celtic Thunder: Storm. I am assured that lots lots of self-pub m/m romance is pretty obviously serial numbers filed off fanfic, but I don't know any specific titles or authors. And while I don't think I've heard that Gideon the Ninth et seq actually are Homestuck fic reworked, apparently knowing the author to be a Homestuck BNF explains a whole lot about the series?

Had not heard that about Gideon. I need to go find the sequel of that
