Somehow this year it became imperative to see the state I live in. It's one of the reasons I've been to Marietta twice this year and I'll be in Cincinnati in a few days. I go to Chillicothe once a month in all that time I have NEVER been to the Adena Mansion. I tried this summer but for some reason it was locked. (The person I talked to wasn't sure why either).

So I went today during their Christmas event. I enjoyed it. It's older than I thought, dating to 1807. It's made of sandstone and quite large for that time period as this was the Northwest territory at that time period and was under the control of the people who should have retained it, the Shawnee and Adena. Sadly we know that wasn't how it was going to go.

Thomas Worthington (Now I know who Worthington a suburb of Columbus is named after) got lucky. He was orphaned and raised by brothers who cared little for him. At 13 he could ask for a different guardian and asked for Dark, a friend of his father who was important in the Revolutionary war. Thomas got a lot of land in what became Ohio for his own military service. He, his wife and daughter came here with 69 people (were they all servants/employees/slaves it wasn't clear. I know he did emancipate his slaves as the NW territory didn't allow for them).

He ended up gov. of Ohio (the 6th) and our first senator. He ended up dying in NYC relatively young. He and his wife had 10 kids all of whom lived to adulthood. To me the most interesting was Sarah who made sure her younger siblings and nephews were highly educated at Harvard and spent much of her time (in Cincinnati) developing resources for widows to be self sufficient which they weren't at that time. She also went Catholic (along with her niece who got abandoned by her husband as a result) and brought over nuns from Europe to set up orphanages in Cincinnati.

His wife Eleanor had some interesting quirks too. She so loved gardening, she had their bedroom on the first floor and had something I've not seen before: a window door. Basically she could open the window and the wall below it was actually a door so she could walk from her bedroom right into her gardens (I need to go back when it's spring to see the garden). The downstairs entertaining room also had some interesting stuff like doors with blocked keyholes because so many important dignitaries came to this house that they didn't want servants peeking/listening through them. (The walls in the whole house are 2 feet thick to give privacy and oh, was made by Latrobe, the architect who designed the white house).

I also liked that they didn't shy away from some of the less savory aspects. There were tenant farmers who were paid in the food they raised and maybe a little money but mostly the tenant house was their major payment. We know that many of the tenant farmers were German. there were other German servants (if there were African ones they kept mum on it) and here's where it gets a wee bit creepy. In the pantry was a trapdoor to the basement which is where they had to live.

In the museum there was a ceremonial pipe shaped like a tomahawk given to Worthington by Tecumesh. If you don't know who he is, Tecumesh was a Native American leader and had he come along about a hundred years earlier, America might have a different future as he was successful in uniting various bands of Indigenous people all over (only to get killed by his own brother) During this time Tecumesh was hoping to remain peaceful with the colonists and apparently believed Worthington wanted the same. We know that's not how it went (though if Worthington had a role in the betrayal they didn't mention and I do not know).

From there I went to Rost, the coffee shop and wrote and panicked because I couldn't find my flash drive. I knew I put it in the messenger bag and I swore I felt it but couldn't find it. SIGH. I still got some writing in.

Up next was TJ Maxx to look for a gift for my senior. Honestly the towels weren't worth going up there so I'm really glad I went to the mansion or it would have been a waste. Oh I still bought them since I was there (vs Wal-Mart) and I did get other nice things to add in as stocking stuffers including nonsense for me.

Stopped in the big Kroger's there to get Fontina cheese (mine doesn't have it) and then decided since I had no lunch besides half the very dry gingerbread muffin at Rost (I brought the rest home to put cinnamon butter on hoping to make it less dry) I'm going to Red Lobster for that reasonably priced faux-kung po shrimp pasta thing...which they DO NOT have. What they do have is very expensive (and if I had remembered hey dumbass you're eating out tuesday-thursday next week I would have left) So holiday trio it is at way too much money but you know what, this semester was hard and I deserved a treat.

Got home and emptied the computer bag. Found the flashdrive. It had found its way into a small hole in the pocket and was between the liner and the leather. Somehow it got in there with no problem. Took me five minutes to fish the damn thing back out because the hole was so small.

I don't know why these horses are on the property but there you have them.

Two days of tea because I forgot Day 9 of tea
Adagio - arabica mocha. If you're thinking that sounds like coffee, yeah me too. It's actually made of coffee leaves (which are caffeine free) and in this blend also yerba mate (a south american tea that I was first introduced to in grad school) that's high caffeine. Chickory and chocolate hazelnut were mixed in. There is a certain funk to it. It was good but I could have done without that chocolate

Yawn Brew - Yorkshire. Man, sometimes a completely unadorned black tea is just the best thing ever and this one was. Loved it.

Day 10 of tea
Adagio - White pear. I'll be honest I'm not a fan of white teas. They're more expensive because it's generally hand picked but it's also low caffeine and subtle taste because it's mostly buds and new leaves. To me it's too subtle. That said, this one is very nice. THe subtle tea taste allows the pear to shine.

Yawn Brew - Again I feel like a Chopped Judge. Someone needs to take whoever is naming these teas aside and either check their taste buds or their naming skills. This was called Movie Night Popcorn. Great name. It would have been good with that genmaicha popcorn tea. This has NONE of that. It's a rooibos with pomegranate and calendula. I would have called it weekend sangria or something because the pomegranate gives it that winey taste. It has a good taste but a bad name.

You know we looked at a facility to buy in Marietta (as well as Tennessee, North Carolina and Cincinnati). Funny.

My Adagio tea samples just arrived. I'm trying out Wizards Grey, Always Nuts and Yuletide Toddy. :)

Yum

Tried the Yuletide Toddy last night. VERY nice! A hint of tart but not too much. Perfect.

The flash drive incident sounds like something that would happen to me. o_O

I'm glad you had a good time at the mansion and got some okay towels and good (if expensive) food.
