Renn Faire

I went to the Ohio renaissance festival this weekend (100 miles away). It’s usually a good time and a great place to shop for my geeky cool friends. Sadly it rained all the way there but I lucked out. It didn’t rain once while I was there. However, it was only 55 degrees but since it’s usually 95 when I have to wear that garb, I wasn’t complaining. It was much more pleasant than heat (except when the wind really picked up since it was so damn damp).

I watched the jousting of course, Dirk & Guido the Swordsmen, Naughty Navels (I was impressed with the woman who could not only belly dance while balancing a beer glass on her head but she could also get on the ground and roll over without spilling a drop), the human chess board, and listened to Hunting McLeod, a Celtic band (I’m a sucker for men in kilts), among other things. I talked to an Ent and dined on spinach pie.

And I shopped. A lot of vendors that I knew from ten years ago are still there (this is a 40+ acre permanent village renn faire that runs for three months. It’s a big too-do). I got some great gifts for people and I spent money on ME for a change. I got a lovely wall plaque of the three phases of the goddess, two signed prints (well three, one’s a gift) from Paul…I forget his name but I’ll stick his website info up later. He was cute and funny and as a treat gave me a Dungeons and Dragon dice ear cuff since I was geeky enough. Got myself earrings called Aphrodite’s Dance that have aqua aura quartz in them.

The one thing I didn’t buy was a souvenir mug like usual. The normal renn fest mug is hand spun with a crest. These ones were your everyday mug with gold embossing on them. Big whoop. I was unimpressed. I even passed on the 4$ beer. Go me. (okay it was too chilly for beer if I planned on staying out in the wind)

Sounds like a fun time. I used to go to the Ren Faire in WI every year in high school and college. I miss it. I went to the King Richard's Faire in MA one year, but haven't gone since. My friends here aren't as interested and I'm not good at going to those things alone.

I liked the one in WI too, though the vendors there were less reasonable price-wise. I'm okay with going alone, luckily since I often am

No I haven't. I guess ELD knew better. We did go to the Tampa one which was nice but hotter than hell

Hoggestowne was really fun when it started but that was because I knew everyone (literally) involved (they were all part of the SCA group I hung out with). I went the first two years and then one more time about three or four years after that. The last time was just...meh.

since I was alone there's not really any pictures. I had one guy take mine but since I have an old fasioned camera we need to a) wait until the rest of the roll is taken b) hope he took a good picture.

and yeah I always go in costume. Learned it's a 9 week training course if you want to be a player tehre

I've gone to the Ohio Renaissance Festival every year for at least ten years, and I've never seen the joust. I'm always too busy listing to the musical performers or seeing the mud show or watching the swordsmen. I guess I should actually watch it sometime.

It's loads of fun, the joust is. You're lucky. Ohio has a very professionally done Renn Faire. Didn't realize you were that close by

I live farther north - near Dayton. It takes us 45 - 55 minutes to get there if the traffic is good.

We have friends that run a chainmail booth, too.

Ah, you live on the opposite side of the state from me then. I'm near the WV/OH/KY border
