Worrisome

So I got the back room as good as I can without me finding a high end climate controlled storage unit for all these frakking books. Read faster Dana. Stop buying, there's a thought (and honest I haven't been buying that many not like I used to. I'm staying away from the library sales best I can.

However I think all the work has taken its toll. Today the bad leg is a nightmare of nerve pain and utter numbness/weakness. I'm worried as I think I've mentioned before, that I'm developing a chronic compartment syndrome that will account for this. I'm going to have to make an appt with an orthopedic surgeon, someone other than I have now as I do not care for how conservative he is treatment wise. Man I miss the guy he took the place of.

I should be driving home tomorrow. The neighbors are primed to look after Rocket. He's starting to stay in more. I'm working on it. Maybe next time he'll be using litter and he can come with me (He wants out like a dog so that doesn't make him a good candidate for travel).

I'm FINALLY working on my [community profile] wipbigbang story. I've been using the comm to finish many a long forgotten Buffyverse story (as in I gave up back in 2003-2005). I don't even remember this one. It was for a ficathon. I was a ficathon addict back in the early 00s. It was a lyric one which is hysterical to me as there are NO lyrics anywhere in this thing. I don't know why I never posted it on FFN back then. That's where I put everything (even stripping sex out of the explicit ones and put them up too) and I'm glad I did because that was still the tail end of the floppy disc/cd days. Flashdrives were just getting started and barely held anything as most of my friends are old enough to remember. I lost SO MANY stories in computer crashes and then to have disc failures. FFN saved me.

But I found a lot of stories not there either and this is one of them. The existing header info has the ficathon, who betaed it back then and it acted like it's finished. I only have 4 chapters. There is nothing at all to indicate I ever did finish it. Deep Dark Sky is its name (Dawn/Connor) I feel like I set it aside to start headlong into Fullmetal Alchemist. I picked it because it's about the last of those old stories that I can honestly say, yeah I can finish this easily enough, just a chapter or two more. The remaining ones aren't a) easy fixes b) have no clue where I was going with it c) kinda sucks, literally found another one that is the most mean spirited thing I've ever seen me write and I hope DID die with all those geocity sites (can I rewrite it and make it less mean, yes relatively easily but I wasn't up for that this year)

I don't even recall where I found this. I did find some on forgotten websites, in ancient undeleted emails to old betas, yahoo's fan listing before they went poof, some on FFN of course and the wayback machine. Will I ever finish them all? No.

But these wips and Buffy taught me an important lesson. Don't post wip's. I didn't do that much in FMA. I have done it a little in Prodigal Son but I also don't have 20 stories going at once. The only downside I have right now with ficathons is I HATE publishing long chaptered stories all at once (which I will have to do with this buffy story) because I swear it's a turn off. Every time I do it, they get very little interest. I'm not sure what it is. (You'd think people would be more leery of wips)

reading meme time:

What I Just Finished Reading:

Together We Rot by Skyla Arndt - a YA horror arc, loved this. That's the more interesting thing with horror, you're not guaranteed a happy ending where everyone lives. Oh I guess that can be true of SF/F/UF but it doesn't seem to happen as much as it does with horror. (I'm not saying someone dies, but just musing on horror in general)

There Comes a Darkness by Katy Rose Pool holy hell, finally finished it...and it just fades into book 2 of three (all told slightly over 1500 pages for the trilogy...yikes)

What I am Currently Reading:

The Widows - a fictionalize version of the first female sheriff in Ohio in the 1920s. It's pretty slow so far. It might be too wrapped up in the coal mining unionization for my sanity. It was half the reason I bought it at the Ohioana book fest but it's a lot. (for those who don't know both grandfathers were coal miners. It killed them early. Also several of their brothers and my grandmother's all died in the mines)

Andújar: The Robot Gentleman of San Juan by Carolina Cardona - a Puerto Rican steampunk I got at the symposium. it's independently published and I do wish it had had a better editor. It's not bad but man it is a bit meandering and also you could play a drinking game with how many times she uses the word cherubic. Not a surprise given the flowery dedication she wrote for me.

What I Plan to Read Next: The Reformatory by Tananarive Due just arrived as an arc. Hmm my looking at page count didn't quite work out as this is a big book, going to be a hard book subject wise. I'm not unfamiliar with the reformatory school (read torture chamber) case from down south and all the bodies they dug up.
