Usually [personal profile] zwei_hexen does this around half way through and I meant to but this month has been on fire. So why not at the end(ish) Let's see what you've been working on all month if you want to share. The rules of the game are lifted directly from [personal profile] zwei_hexen's usual post.

Do you have a passion project, not-so-guilty pleasure, hot obsession, or slow-burn romance with a fandom? Newest fics you posted? Chapter updates? If so, would you share it with us? Whether it's a 300K WiP or a double drabble, please feel free to leave us a link to it in the comments.

A few simple considerations:

Age restrictions and content warnings: Please keep in mind this journal is public and has no content warning. For your convenience, we've put in an age restriction to this post only, so you can also post headers and summaries to more mature-rated stories. However, please put in warnings if what you share might contain possible triggers and put any mature and/or NSFW content (images, text examples, etc.) behind a text link only, to keep this journal a safe place to visit for everybody.

Comment size, images and headers: As cuts don't work on comments, please crop/downsize images to 600 pix max for the longest side and limit text samples to about 20 lines. If you post an AO3 header with a wall of tags, please limit them to about 4 lines here and indicate that there are more.

For ease of browsing, please name your fandom in the subject line of your comment and consider making different comments for each fandom you’re sharing, if you’d like.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them here or to drop a note to [personal profile] cornerofmadness

We’re looking forward to seeing what you’ve been working on! Also, please check out the older rec-your-work posts you can find under the link on the top right of the journal; we try to keep the fandom tags updated on these entries for your convenience.

FAKE, but an AU

I've been disappointed by how few hits I've had on this one. Yes, it's an old, OLD manga fandom, and yes, it's an AU, the start of something longer, parts of which already exist, but still...

Stumbling Into Something is the story of how Ryo Maclean, also known as Country singer Randy Lane, meets New York detective Dee Laytner when they both happen to go on vacation to Hawaii at the same time. Will this be nothing more that a holiday romance, or might it lead to something more?

It's always the FAKE fics I think are my best that get the least hits, and almost no kudos.

I hope I can get the next part written soon so I can sort out the dozen or more one-shots written for challenges into some sort of order and get those posted to my journals.

Yeah, sadly. Plus I think some FAKE fans just don't like my take on the characters, for whatever reason. Maybe because I kind of brought them into the modern world.

Ah well, I enjoy writing the characters and reading my own stories, so I guess that's what matters.

Yes, and I do have one fan of my FAKE fics, which is nice.

For this, I'm going to recommend the story I produced the most on this month: "I Don't Like Your Girlfriend — Remix". This is (as the title says) a remix of my earlier fic "I Don't Like Your Girlfriend", which started out as a fairly standard love triangle fic and ended up as an almost 100K-word polyamory fic. The remix came about because the original story was written in 3rd person and I decided I wanted to see how it would work in 1st person. The sample I giving here came from the most recent chapter I've remixed, chapter 55, which is a tribute to the scene in The Hobbit where Thorin and company arrive at Beorn's house.

"Not another one!" Mrs. Lee grumbles as she stomps off to get the door. I motion the others to be quiet, and we hear Mrs. Lee. "I know the story: You're Seo-jeong's girlfriend. You've come to make peace between us. You love my daughter more than anything and you want to make her happy."

"What. . . how. . . why, yes, that's all right. Yes. How did you know?" Yoojung's voice had never sounded so surprised as it did in that moment.

"You're late," Mrs. Lee says as she leads the way back to the living room. "Seo-jeong's other girlfriends are already here. Have a seat—" she points to an empty corner of the couch next to Lua— "and as soon as I fix you a cup of tea we can get to the bottom of all this."

After fixing Yoojung a cup of tea, Mrs. Lee takes her own cup of tea and retreats to her chair. She looks at all of us, a vaguely disapproving look on her face. She then turns her attention to me. "You were here first, Suyeon, so maybe you'll know: Are there are more of Seo-jeong's girlfriends who are going to show up and interrupt us, or can we talk in peace?"

I look nervously at Doyeon, then back at Mrs. Lee. "This is all of us— I mean— Seo-jeong has one more girlfriend, but I asked her to take Seo-jeong to the street market so that I could take the train out here and talk to you without her knowing."

Glad you enjoyed it! This is one of my pieces of writing that I'm most proud of, to the point that I'm sure people who talk writing with me long enough get tired of hearing me talk about them. (The other piece that I'm guilty of with this is my story "Going Backstage," where the two main characters don't share a common language and so conduct their entire romance through translation apps.)

It came about through a combination of "failure to plan" and "stubbornness." The couple in question were chosen through the time-honored method of "they're cute — they should kiss!" Then once I thought to check if they had a language in common and realized that they didn't, rather than changing my characters, I decided to stick with it, remembered that Google Translate is a thing, and went from there. It ended up being a fairly major part of the story — they spend over half a chapter unable to talk to each other because one of the characters accidentally left her phone in a hotel room, and the other one had her phone battery die.

I hope that story is true! I think I've also heard of couples where the only language they have in common is Esperanto.
