mostly did depressing stuff for the lawyer so i want to talk about something good. But before that, the computer gurus out there want to help me with this. I keep getting the blue screen of death and then this message upon rebooting. I THOUGHT it was that damn new norton but actually last night I pulled out the sandisc pen drive and my computer worked but didn't connect that to this until today when i put it back in (since it has my work stuff on it) and it immediately caused a failure.

Follow these steps to solve the problem with a device driver
You received this message because a device driver installed on your computer caused the Windows operating system to stop unexpectedly. This type of error is referred to as a "stop error." A stop error requires you to restart your computer.
Troubleshooting is available that might help you solve the problem

Depending on which situation is applicable to you, do one of the following:
• If this problem occurred after you installed a new hardware device on your computer, the problem might be caused by the device driver. Use the Dell Driver Reset Tool or uninstall the driver.

• If this problem occurred after you installed new software, the software might have installed a driver that caused the problem. Try uninstalling the software.

• If you don't know the specific driver or software, try performing a System Restore.
• Go online and check for updated drivers on the Microsoft Update website.

(and yes I know my first problem is that this is a Dell)

So the fun stuff, well go look at my last three [livejournal.com profile] bookheaven posts and see all the fun manga I've read

mound of manga one

mound of manga two

mound of manga three this last one discusses the difference between the Chevalier D'Eon anime and manga and since I'm NOT up on the technical aspect of things or news and what not I had a few questions there. But as an example of what I mean about them being vastly different right down to the character design, here:

Anime D’Eon

Anime D’Eon as Lia (note she retains his male clothing which would be advantageous in a sword fight)

Manga D’Eon (sorry, it's SO hard to scan a manga without breaking the spine which i won't do)

Manga D’Eon turning into Lia (included because it captivated me)

Manga D’Eon as Lia (note she insists her brother wear corsets, petticoats, frilly crap, high heels, all the things I want to wear in a sword fight, poor D'Eon, but much more close to reality. D'Eon was a crossdresser)

i'd suggest getting an ax, and swinging it as hard as you can into your computer. sure, it won't solve anything, but it'll make you feel better. :p

ok. well, to uninstall programs, you go into the control panel and double-click on the icon that says "uninstall programs".

now wait a minute...does the computer fail to boot up when you try to boot it up when you have the pen drive plugged in? or does this happen when it's already been on for a while and you plug the pen drive in?

i'd suggest uninstalling and reinstalling the pen drive driver and see if that helps. you can usually find drivers on the manufacturer's website or on the CD that comes with the pen drive, if you still have it.

there was no cd with this pen drive. it's software is INSIDE the drive itself. last night it crashed three times almost immediately after rebooting. Was up maybe 10 minutes crash, then crash again but i've had this pen drive since june. then i pulled it out last night to put in another drive but when i put it in again today it immediately crashed it and I pulled it out and didn't dare to put it back.

do you just pull the pen drive out without clicking first on the "remove hardware safely" icon in the taskbar? that could be what caused the problem. it needs to be stopped in case it was trying to write data to the drive, so if you just pulled it without doing that maybe that's what's causing the problems?

with this sandisk it freaks out over thatand I'm careful to never do that and it DID read that when i put it back in, saying i hadn't. I'm thinking I didn't pull you out at all. you crashed, stupid thing

Generally speaking, I actually hold Dell in fairly high regard as far as a prebuilt system is concerned. I know that you and [livejournal.com profile] evil_little_dog have had very good luck with Gateway machines the mention of which I abhor as much as eMachines. However... I think I can help some. First let's see if we can roll back the driver, ne? what this means it to revert to a previous version. You'd do this when you updated a driver and it started crashing on the new driver. Or is this a totally new driver for a device? Well anyway...

To roll back a driver:

To roll back to the previous version of a driver
Open Device Manager. (click Start, and then click Control Panel. Double-click System. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.)
Right-click the device for which you want to reinstall the previous version of the driver, then click Properties.
Click the Drivers tab.
Click Roll Back Driver.

Removing or updating a driver:

Well, follow the same instructions as above, only click remove driver instead. See?

OR you can just right click the device in question, and it will give you a little menu that has the options to update driver, disable the device, or uninstall the device. sometimes uninstalling the device and letting it go through the installation process again will solve a problem like this. Sometimes updating a driver will have the same effect too.

Let's see there was another question here...

How do I uninstall a program:

Click Start
Click Control Panel
Double Click: Add or Remove Programs
Find the program you need to remove (may take a few seconds for the list to populate.)
Click on the program and the options available (usually change/remove) button will appear.
Click the button and follow the instructions.

Pretty simple really... Afterwards take two aspirin and call me in the morning. ^_~

hmm my question is this, this pen drive worked just fine for three months. I've done nothing different in terms of drivers. I've installed nothing new. why would it do this? I'm not sure I can roll back anything. This is the driver it came with. unaltered in any way that I know about

Um... well, unfortunately, it is possible that the drive itself has gone bad. Which would suck if the data isn't backed up somewhere. If you just use it to carry things back and forth then no big deal right? but if you keep stuff stored on there that isn't stored on your hard drive as well, then you could loose data if the pen drive is bad. Have you tried plugging it into a different usb port? I know that sounds stupid... but are you plugging it in directly, or through a USB hub?

directly plugging it in. I'll check it at work tomorrow and no, there's nothing on there I don't have elsewhere other than some music and manga downloads. You know what did this, don't you? [livejournal.com profile] evil_little_dog and I were talking about her IE problems and I said I need to back up my hard drive since it's been a while. She said she had hers backed up on a pen drive. I said, that's not a good idea since they're fragile. i've killed them in under three months (so if this one needs me to claim it's little life and get my money back it won't be the first time). No more than 10 minutes went by and the first blue screen of death hit. The damn thing heard me.

You realise that when I hear this, what I think immediately is "WOW big F'ing pen drive!!" I guess I ought to back mine up too.. but no way all my data would fit on a pen drive... I don't think... usually takes several CD's to do a full backup. I need a DVD writer... yus.

yeah I tried to put my hard drive onto a cd once this started happening and it wouldn't fit. Hopefully the dvd writer worked. must look at thta tonight (I'm assuming SJ's only putting selected topics on the pen)
