Yes I made it back to OH and thank the goddess I left when i did instead of coming back yesterday like I wanted to. 77 where it meets 70, the flood waters were to the edge of the elevated highway. When I was about 10 miles from Athens I knew i was in for it. I glanced over and said, huh i don't remember a boat ramp this close to the road...wait! I don't remember a LAKE there. Needless to say it wasn't. The Hocking River had spilled everywhere. Many parts of my trip on 50 and 32 were underwater still.

Speaking of the goddess, happy Ostara (or Mabon to my southern hemisphere Pagan friends). I got to spend it hauling butt over three states. AND for the extra added excitement, i picked up a cough last night out of no where. I don't feel sick but it feels like a 1 ton elephant is on my chest and I hate coughing because a) it inevitably makes the nerves of my arm spear themselves on that arthritic spur in my neck and b) makes me vomit because the valve between stomach and esophagus is totally shot and any pressure makes it blow. GRRRR.

Oh yeah, let me get to my subject line - seriously three Buffy fans found my FFN stuff today, mostly my Connor stuff. In the last two months I'm betting at least 12 new fans have favorited me. Oh and can anyones explain to me the new trend of making someone a favorite but NEVER talk to them, no feedback (and in the case of my online dating service no contact at all...and why does a dating service even have a favorites option???) It makes me want to get off my butt and finish Hyperion's Son at long last.

And this depressed the hell out of me. Borders is bankrupt. Curse you wal-mart and Amazon. Now I can see Amazon being a threat but WAL-HELL? Huh? They barely even have a book selection and it's CENSORED. You can't get anything remotely non-Christian or family oriented by Wal-Mart's own admission.

I do NOT want B&N to buy Borders. I have lost my taste for them. For one their membership pales in comparison to Borders (for one it costs $$$ with fewer benefits). Secondly at least with manga in Columbus and Pittsburgh homosexuals don't exist. No Yuri or Yaoi is sold. Nada. Hell it's hard to find the over 18 manga. Must protect the kiddies I guess. Hear the sarcasm (anyone else find this issue with B&N in other parts of the country?)

Oddly two days ago I was bemoaning not getting to use my border bucks and coupons on line the manager said, you will once we get our website back from Amazon in the summer. WTF? You actually let your competitor take over your site and inhibit use of money saving coupons? You almost deserve your fate.

and b) makes me vomit because the valve between stomach and esophagus is totally shot and any pressure makes it blow.

Gotta ask...projectile vomit? Like Exorcist style? <----knows she shouldn't find that amusing.

I have that problem with B&N. They have a selection....just not what I want to read. I find it entertaining that they'll sell romance novels and not over 18 manga....figures. And wal-mart is the epitome of all evil. It's ruining businesses and I honestly believe that it's megalomania is part of this economic woe the US is experiencing. Only reason we shop there is that it's about the only place we can shop.

on occasion yes. or better i inhale it

Borders is DEFINITELY better on the manga than B&N

Wal-Mart yeah I have to agree there.

I'm really shocked about Borders. Here it's easier to find them than B&N (I always mentally call them Barnes and Ignoble) and there's always people in there when I go into their stores. You're right about their manga selection too, they're definitely the best place here outside the manga shop to buy manga.

I don't know, usually you can sort a tell when a store is doing badly, but Borders just didn't give that vibe. I'm really surprised. And bummed.

that was my reaction. Borders (and B&N) are always packed. I think a lot of this has to do with the stock market in general. Books are a luxury item really. While I would argue about my ability to live without them, the reality is just like 4 years ago when I was in WI and had no money, they're the last thing I'd buy if I could barely cover gas prices, food and utilities.

maybe i'll take the Bush Bonus (provided my loans don't intercept that stimulus check) and go to Borders

OMG! I freakin hate that! It's one of the things that makes me want to rip out my hair and go "why?! for the love of god WHY?!". Especially when they favorite you, favorite your story, add their story to one of their lists.. and do EVERYTHING EXCEPT give one word of feedback. I mean a "wow. I'm favoriting this" would even be okay.

I'm gonna stop before I start ranting..

I KNOW. What is up with that. They do all three to me too and i never hear from them. While it's nice to know I'm so loved, how about saying hey, liked your story bunches or something

Yikes - I've been hearing about the flooding, but your place should be okay though... right? *worries*

And I don't think we've ever had a Borders down here. We've got a huge Barnes & Noble and a Books-a-Billion - used to have a Walden's (but Books-a-Trillion opened a store just two stores down and, well...).

Waldens is Borders sister store but it's small, always has been, an in the mall kind of thing

We had a Books-a-Million in FL but always preferred Borders or B&N to them.

WHY, oh WHY...*wails at the idea of losing Borders* I should try to get up there sometime soon and pick up as many books as I can, since the comic book guy never can find what I want from his supplier.

Damn it, I hadn't heard about Borders. Admittedly, I've never shopped a B&N (largely because, well, there are Borders nearby and not the other, except for their outlet, Bookstar, which is dandy, actually); but I like Borders rewards, when I use 'em. And that's where I've spent several midnight jaunts with like-minded crazy people, waiting for Harry Potter books.

*sigh*

We never shop at Wal-Mart. Thank goodness we live in a large city with choices. (I don't even like driving through their parking lot - it's always filled with huge people who meander in front of vehicles like they own the place, hauling their 15 screaming kids and swearing like sailors on leave...)

I do shop Amazon a LOT, though. It's uber convenient and they have choices that even Borders never did (like all the BBC books, hard-to-find, and even out-of-print stuff)...

I like Borders a lot too. Though, yes Amazon does have its perks and I use them well.

as for the pitiful selection of books at Wal-Mart and Wally in general, oh if I could avoid this store I would but it's literally the only game in town. Love your description of it, so apropos

Borders is BANKRUPT?!?!?! How is that possible? I just dumped about $40.00 into that store yesterday! If they go, there will be no possible way I can get manga. That blows.

On the bright side, long live the Buffy cult!

well yuo could buy it on Amazon...who put them out of business should it happen. Gah.

This resurgence in Buffy fans is neat.

Only if they take money orders. I don't have a credit card and don't plan on getting one unless absolutely necessary. I actually never checked out Amazon before.

at this point you can't do anything without a credit card. You can't rent a card, reserve a hotel room or plane ticket. You can't even get tickets from ticketmaster without one. You're practically barred from most of adult life without a credit card unfortunately

Huh, I have two Borders gift cards that I got for Discover cashback rewards. I guess I' better get my ass on-line and buy something pronto. I like that it goes through Amazon because then I get to use my prime shipping. I don't think I'll be getting anymore of their gift cards from Discover though.

Glad you got home safely.

i'm less thrilled with Amazon since they are functioning to put Borders out of business and Amazon is so.damn.slow.

Yeah, their free shipping is slow, but I did spring for the prime shipping and it really is worth the cost. I really prefer shopping on-line to going into a bookstore anymore. For one thing, no bottom shelves to torture my knees. *g*
