I'm transfering all the files over to the new computer. Is there a way to save all my bookmarks and take them too? (I'm using IE since that probably matters. I have nothing bookmarked under mozilla since it never seems to work for anything I want it to work for)

Oh and even though the new computer is off there's a little green light on, on the back of it. Why? any clues? And gah vista does blow and microsoft 2007, that is the freaking worst. Who the hell thought this was a good idea? Let's take all the icons and buttons we've been using for years and totally redo and hide them. thanks for nothing

File --> Import and Export --> choose 'Export Favorites' in the wizard. I use an .htm file that all my browsers can use for importing (and periodically update it so I keep the bookmarks backed up).

Green light on the back of the computer: One of two things - the computer is plugged into a live power source and everything is a-ok (the light should be near the power cable, not blinking) or the computer has a live network connection (the light should be where the network cable plugs into the box, blinking is ok).

The power source light is a nice feature to have, if you run into a situation where the computer won't turn on (if it's not on, then you can check to make sure it's plugged in, power strip is switched on and doesn't need the fuse reset, etc before taking the box apart).

The network cable light is a bit different - most network cards stay live as long as the computer has power running to it at all - they can be configured so that the computer can be turned on remotely over the network ("Wake on LAN"). This is something that usually only sees use by the big server farms, but they also buy a *lot* of network cards at a time, so the manufacturers cater to them.

Either way, nothing to worry about.

Yep, Ivan so far loves the tiny elephant and the crinkly flower, and likes eating the squeaky mouse! :)

Ugh, yes, Vista is a PITA. But Office 2007, I really like. I don't have it, but my friend does and I write on his laptop a lot and I found that once I got used to it and customized it to my liking, that it was A-OK =) But maybe that's just me!?

probably just you. My friend from the High Tech Council said nothing is intuitive about 2007. She's so right. I'm sure once i get it all down i'll like it but gah!

Totally with you about the idiocy of Vista and Office 2007. I wouldn't care if they had decided to change the interface if they had given the option to revert to 'classic' Office (like they did for XP).

Microsoft is lucky I still haven't forgiven Apple for the iMac mouse, otherwise I'd jump ship.

I would have jumped ship BUT half the freaking school software doesn't interface with Mac

I'm forever baffled why people hate Vista any more or less than any other Microsoft OS.

We use OpenOffice where I work.

i think because it hides things. You have to go thru and poke at each icon since it's not something seen before. I just find it far less user friendly

I still have 2003 Office at home but the school went to 2007 because all our students have brand spanking new laptops....

How to save your IE Favorites? that's super simple. Stick in yoru thumb drive, find your favorites folder which has a big star instead of a folder icon. Usually this is in C:\documents and settings\username\favorites\

Just pick up that star folder and drop it on your fumdrive... put and then pick it up off the fumdrive and drop it in the same folder on your other computer... I don't know if VISTA changes where that folder is, but if it isn't where I said, then just run a search for Favorites. I don't htink it's necessary to 'export' and 'import' them like that. I've always just moved them.

Sorry you weren't able to find a new compy without Vista. I bought a 'business' computer instead of a home one just so I could get in on the last few days of XP availability. I should have bought two dozen and offered them around for an extra hundred dollars to all the people who are now shut out of having a reasonable operating system... as if XP doesn't hide enough of the 'Shit I Use Everyday" from me. *rolls eyes*

Alas for you, it would have been a Dell. ^__^ I know you don't like them, but I have not had a Dell yet that was in any way junky. I have my Dad's old Dimension here which Lexi used for school for a couple of years.. well, it is a bit slow, but otherwise, it's pretty good. It goes online, it gets email. It really should ahve Win 98 on it, and I may actually bust it back down to that. It's only a 500 mhz processor.
