“What is that thing you’re wearing, Spock?” Bones eyed the pyramid piercing a sphere that Spock wore on his dress uniform. “You don’t seem the jewelry type. Surely decorating yourself is some sort of emotional response.”
Spock simply cocked up an eyebrow, knowing that this was Dr. McCoy’s usual attempt to bait him into an emotive outburst. McCoy would have to try a lot harder to override years of Vulcan training. “It’s the Vulcan symbol of philosophy, infinite diversity in infinite combination. I thought it appropriate for the peace delegation.” He gestured to the large conference room that the Enterprise crewmembers were putting the finishing touches on before the doors opened and ambassadors from all quadrants of space poured in for food, drink, music and talk.
“Interesting,” Bones conceded. “But a pin?”
“Never underestimate the power of a symbol, doctor.” Spock rolled his fingers over the gold metal. “This symbol speaks loudly to whomever knows its meaning, just as your caduceus does.” Spock flicked his hand toward McCoy’s collar. “Or your countries’ flags in times of war. The Enterprise itself is a symbol.”
McCoy considered this. “But what she means depends on who you are.”
Spock nodded. “Indeed. I think the captain wishes to see us.” He pointed over McCoy’s shoulder and the doctor turned. At least McCoy hadn’t claimed expounding the idea of accepting all things as they come as an emotion. It was merely the logical thing to do. Why should everyone be exactly the same, after all?

Date: 2009-03-16 03:11 pm (UTC)I loved Star Trek TOS, so this was fun for me. I think you caught Spock & Bones and Bones's cantankerous ways very well. And I knew Immediately what Bones was pointing at. *is ST geek* ;-)
