Flooding

Just talked to my parents. Spin off storms from Ivan have whacked the crap out of my home town near the tristate corner of PA, WV and OH (about 25 miles from Pittsburgh). The storms were far worse than expected causing the worst flooding in history there. It took them by surprise so much that the kids are actually still stranded in the high school. My brother took 2 hours to get home...less than 5 miles away because of all the flooding. My mom nearly ended up spending the night in a hotel because of it. My parents live on top of a huge hill so there's no fear of them having problems.

However my brother's sister in law was supposed to get married tomorrow but it's a state of emergency now. Sadly, I don't feel bad. She's been so miserable to me and my family and to her own sister (how dare her younger sister get married before her) that I can't help the vaguely amused karma got you feeling.

especially in a school on top of a mine. If the water gets into there...

They built a school on top of a mine? That's just asking for trouble.

Glad to hear your family's all right. I don't know anyone effected by this except LJ folks, but it sounds pretty bad.

It's bad. Pittsburgh, being surrounded by three rivers is prone to flooding. At least my best friend and her family are living up a big ol' hill too. Still, I'd be terrified to be stuck in that high school since there are coal mines directly under it (that ended my swim team sojourn in the 80's, our school pool fell into the mines)

Oh my god! (re: your pool!)

Are those kids still at the high school right now?

They were at 8:00pm e.s.t.

I've had friend's homes do that too, fall into the mine. Marching band, on the football field, lots of times I'd be marching in ankle deep sulfur/iron orange mud and you could feel the ground shake from them blasting. Both grandfathers were coal miners. One died on black lung. I worked in coal once too. Lost a couple uncles in various mining accidents.

I love karma. I had a friend who wagged school for a few days by saying that she was sick, and then when she had to go back to school for exam week, she actually got sick.
