what would be making my computer's fan be running constantly. Everything slows to a crawl when this kicks on. The room isn't hot. It's not dirty (but I'll be buying a can of compressed air anyhow). It seems to do it when I've got several windows open.

This computer is barely a year old.I don't want to have to replace it but from the way it's acting it's on the verge of something bad.

It has the free AVG on it which runs daily and I do ad aware weekly. nothing but cookies keep coming up

Fan goes on when the processor gets hot. On a PC you can adjust the thermostat settings for the fan according to Bob. When you turn on the computer you hit F1 for diagnostics to get to that portion. Or, throw PC out the window (that's my advice).

I had something like that happen once, and it really was the fan. It had developed a short or something, and the computer was fine when it was replaced.

My suggestion is to crack it open and take a look in there. See if anything is dirty, blocked, crossed, whatnot. While it's open, clean it with the air. Then, leave the side off and turn it back on so you can see what happens inside while it works. If the side being off helps solve the problem with the fan running so much, heat may have been your issue. You may need another fan. Or you may need to replace the one you have.

Use Task Master to check your CPU useage when this is happening. If your computer is slowing to a crawl, the fan might be kicking on because the CPU is being overly utilized for some reason.
