okay was watching Being Human lately (and even though i set it to record three minutes past the hour i STILL didn't get the damn end of the finale) Anyhow, usually I'm good with the slang but I have no idea what is a 'tv license?' Also smashing the granny I'm pretty sure i get but clarification would be fun. Also I love how much dirtier the language is and how our censors bleep it but leave just enough of the word that it's totally pointless to bleep.

Okay I've been meaning to do this picspam for weeks but was too busy and in too foul a mood.

As I understand it, you need a license in order to receive BBC -- it's not free, like the networks are here.

I've also heard that over there you also have to pay for using the phone even if it's just across the hall....and the heating system is sort of like a slot machine.

Seems to me we take a lot for granted that isn't provided for the Britains.

That's nothing like universaly true. Phone's like that tend to be in student halls or shelters and while some people still have heating like that it's nothing like the norm. I've never lived anywhere, or known anyone who lived anywhere, with heating like that.

Not only in Britain but various European countries (and Japan) have similar licensing systems). In Finland there has been lots of discussion about restructuring and refinancing YLE with the new "media license" etc...
