Goku still didn’t know how he felt about snow. His opinion had improved a little ever since Hakkai and Gojyo had invited him and Sanzo over for Sukiyaki. Still, if Sanzo hadn't gone out in the snow, Goku surely wouldn't have ventured out either. Even now, coaxed out for a second time by Gojyo, Goku felt an uneasiness in his bones.
He didn't know how to make the other men understand, though he thought maybe Hakkai knew; Hakkai knew so many things. Snow brought a deep silence. It blanketed everything, robbing the world of sound. Hakkai had said as much but he liked it. Hakkai said he felt at peace. Goku had only known the birds and other animals that found his cave. As far as he had known, he had been alone in the world, which was barely bigger than his cell. Most of the year there were sounds and signs of life. Snow erased all that.
He was afraid it would wipe him out too, that he would simply melt into the whiteness. Looking around at the mounds surrounding Gojyo's home, Goku still wasn't sure that he wouldn't. He never got used to the idea of everything being a monotone white except where brown trunks of trees thrust upward.
"Monkey, we brought you out here to play," Gojyo said, his cigarette dangling from his mouth.
"Told you it was pointless. He doesn't like it," Sanzo replied, leaning in the doorway out of the wind.
"How can ya play in this crap?" Goku kicked at a drift.
"Hey Goku," Gojyo called.
Goku turned and got hit square in the face with a ball of snow. He wiped it away. "What the hell?"
"You asked how we play in snow." Grinning Gojyo rapid-fired two more snowballs, smacking Goku hard.
Howling, Goku scooped up his own snow and started throwing it back.
"They got stupid in less than five minutes, you owe Hakkai." Sanzo crowed, fishing out his cigarettes.
"Not stupid, just playful," Hakkai countered, stooping to pack snow into a tight ball. Without warning, he nailed Goku between the shoulder blades.
The smaller man whirled around and hit Hakkai with unerring accuracy. Snow flew as the three men stalked each other through the yard. Ice balls dangling from his long hair, Goku paused, holding up a hand. "Why isn't Sanzo all covered in snow and freezing?"
"Good point, Monkey."
Sanzo's violet eyes narrowed but he didn't have time to duck the frozen barrage. Once everyone was good and coated with snow, Hakkai chivvied them inside, making sure everyone kicked off boots and coats at the door.
"Have a seat. I'll make us all some tea," Hakkai said.
Goku flopped on the couch. Gojyo put a hand on Goku's head, ruffling his hair. "See, kiddo, you can learn to like snow." A faintly serious expression passed over his face. "You're not alone any more, Goku."
"If you're going to bury me in snow, I'm gonna wish I were."
Gojyo laughed, patting Goku harder. Goku knew he was right; snow wasn't so bad after all.
