Winry didn’t know who talked Ed into it; Alphonse, Roy, a daring letter from Ling, or if Ed had come to this on his own, but he had paid for a weekend in a romantic suite in the Central Arms Hotel. He didn’t even fuss when he had to put on a suit, tie and hat to take her out to a fancy restaurant that she had no doubt came recommended by his former commander. It wasn’t a place Ed was likely to have stumbled on.

Of course, the young man who had stood before her in the hotel room, looking like he was strangling on his tie and who made an otherwise attractive hat look menacing would never have been mistaken for Edward. He cleaned up better than expected, looking incredibly handsome and yet uncomfortable in his finery.

At least he relaxed over dinner and by the time they were at the dance hall, the tie was in his pocket. As their bodies moved to the music, Winry felt the most intimate parts of her warm. She danced closer to Ed, her hips brushing his. Even as he blushed, he pulled her closer.

“Let’s go back to the hotel,” she whispered in Ed’s ear.

He beamed, taking her hand. Pausing to get his hat from the hat-check girl, Ed went outside to enthusiastically, loudly hail a cab with the maximum amount of invectives when the first one sailed by. Now that was her Edward and she was going to fully enjoy him. No, she wasn’t just going to enjoy this night. She was going to demand more nights like this, as many as Ed could give her.

They hadn’t expected a blizzard when they had gone to Central so Edward could consult with Mustang on some new alchemy tomes the older alchemist had gotten from southern Creata. Winry was glad that Mr. Mustang had gotten them a cottage instead of a hotel, saying only that it was a family member’s and it beat sleeping on hotel sheets. He had seen to it that it was well stocked with food and luckily, wood piled high out back.

The electricity had died hours ago, but the fireplace kept their cozy little cottage warm and there were no neighbors to offend when Ed had a stomping fit that his perusal of the books would have to wait until daybreak or he figured out that there were oil lamps in the pantry. Winry had no intentions of telling him. She was hoping he’d realize there were more fun things to do than read old books.

She had found an old crank-wound phonograph and a decent selection of music. Winry gave the machine a good winding up and put on a record. There was a little hiss from the record so she pulled up the needle and blew the dust off it. Setting it back in the grooves, she was rewarded with a wonderful dance tune. Rolling up the throw rug in front of the fire place, Winry held out a hand to Ed.

“Ed, quit complaining and come dance with me.”

He gave her a disappointingly baffled look then grinned. He took her hand. About time he figured out what else one could do in a secluded cottage on a cold winter’s night in front of a roaring fire. Later, she’d put that rug back down and see if he could make that mental leap, too. She had faith in him.

Roy felt his face go warm. Did Edward Elric just get one over on him? The smug smirk, the evil gleam in Ed’s golden eyes said ‘yes, Roy had just been outsmarted by a thirteen year old asshole.’

“Don’t you say another word!” Roy warned, stabbing a finger at Edward. The boy’s smile widened. “I mean it and don’t you tell anyone, either.” Ed raised his eyebrows. Roy sighed. All he had wanted to do was listen to classical music on the radio and sign the huge stack of paperwork Riza had sadistically put on his desk. His mind had shut down an hour before Edward had even shown up; the only things functioning were key organs and his signing hand.

“I’m going to tell everyone,” Edward promised, his feet shuffling as if he could barely restrain himself from going out to do that this very minute.

Part of Roy’s mind woke up from the signing paperwork coma and he smiled. “You might want to reconsider that, Edward.”

“There is nothing you can do or say that’ll make me reconsider.” The boy’s maniacal grin nearly split his head in two.

Roy shrugged. “So be it. Let me give you your new orders while you’re here.” The one thing his aunt had taught Roy was how to read people and get in their heads. Some were harder than others. Ed’s head might as well have been made of glass. As Roy started to relate the most aggravating, borderline demeaning orders he could think of, Edward lost color, his jaw sagging. Elric might be a thirteen year old asshole, but Roy had nearly seventeen years of extra practice in the co-related arts of assholery and being a bastard. This was the first salvo in what was sure to be a protracted war between them.

“This has a lot of warm spices in it,” Ling said, pushing a dish to Al.

Al had insisted on exploring all aspects of Xingese culture so he could share the details with people back home. His father had said in those far too few and too brief conversations they had that the best way to defeat fear of foreign people was to truly understand their ways. Maybe it was a good way to keep wars from cropping up again, but Al suspected that humans would just find other things to spark those off.

He pushed the dark thoughts away and concentrated on the spread Ling had his servants lay out for them. There was more food than he could possibly eat – though he suspected if Ed were here, he, Ling and Lan Fan could demolish it all. Beautiful young women played instruments Al had never even seen before in some cases and sounded like nothing he’d heard. The music had a different scale and jangled his nerves a bit.

Al picked up one of the rabbit heads already a bit put off, but didn’t want to insult his host. The cooked flesh was red with spice. Al took one bite and nearly died. Warm? His tongue and teeth surely just melted. His face had to be as red as the chilies in the dish. Oh god!

“That is girl food,” Lan Fan said, her face obscured by her mask. She sounded like she was smiling. “You can try man food next. It’s hotter.”

“Are you trying to kill me?” Al rasped and Ling pushed a milky-looking drink toward him.

“You’re the one who wanted to explore. It’s good food,” Ling sniffed.

Al wondered if he’d live out this exploration or die, head melted from the spices of hell.

WHEEE, I love my ficlets! These are too much fun.

I want to know how Ed thought he had something over on Roy, though. What did he see/hear/realize? Evil little brat.
