After considering these factors: a) didn't sleep b) have a migraine + nausea c) it's in the high 90's d) I need 80$ next week to board cats e) hotels jumped their prices for a weekend as much as doubling them (except you Days Inn and Suites of Worthington, kudos for not gouging) f) still owe massive amounts of money for the Wales trip and g) my sugar is in the clouds and even insulin isn't bringing it down I decided to skip the state fair. My only goal there was to see some art and eat some crap.

I can go to the two art shows I want to see in Athens next week and get my art quota and I will just go to the Irish Fest (which unbelievably doesn't open until 11 am so it's already stinky hot by then) and the casino and come home. I could actually do all three but two is enough. If I had been paying attention, I would have seen the state fair ran 2 weeks and could have driven up then.

and before I forget day 3 of the Photo a Day august challenge - the prompt is coin. I took this picture in Criccieth Wales, though it came out rather poorly (all the attempts did). Being from a country where all our coinage is of men dead for a century or more, I had no idea that Queen Elizabeth ages on the pound. If you look close from left to right there is young Elizabeth, middle aged and mature.

It's totally amusing how every couple of decades, they bring out a new profile of the Queen on the coins and notes and the profiles get less and less flattering. She should totally be like Elizabeth I and ban all depictions of her that make her look over 25.

seriously. That wouldn't be a bad idea. I honestly didn't know that she aged on the money. That amused me to no end.

Oh, that's very cool about the Queen aging on the coins.

I mean, most of our lives, we had exactly the same designs on our coins.

Kennedy's been dead a century or more? Man, I'm older than I thought... (Roosevelt, too?)

*grin*

That's very cool about the pound coins - I think I knew that (I mean, I've seen Canadian currency with both the young and the older profiles), but never really connected it.

hahaha yes but those aren't coins i see on a daily basis (wait, is Roosevelt even on a coin?)

I didn't notice it on the Canadian currency but it was striking when I had those three pounds in my hand

FDR is on the DIME, CoM.

We also have two dollar coins (more or less still in circulation, although not being minted) with women who've been dead a century or more.

snort. ignore me (points up to that sugar thing, it's nearly 400 today, my brain died about 200 sugar points ago)

well yes we do but I don't really consider them much since I can't remember when the last time i've seen one. it's been years and I had to explain to the girl at Subway what it was

You're forgiven. I also forgot the Eisenhower silver dollar.

I have a bunch of them. One of the vending machines at work gives them as change.

oh yeah he is

really? wow. The vending machine at work only takes credit cards or student id cards which function as credit cards (why don't the faculty ones I wonder. be damned if i put in a credit card)

Date: 2012-08-05 06:18 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wildrider.livejournal.com
Yeah, it takes up to a $10 bill, and if it gives change over a dollar, it's coins.

Also takes cards, but yeah, I'm not going to use my debit card to buy a $1.25 soda and then get the "fee" tacked on. (Or my credit card, for that matter.)

that's neat

or have someone put in an illegal card reader. I know they've made student id cards to be like debit cards so basically on campus it's the ONLY thing a student needs but if you're going to do that then you should do the faculty too

I wouldn't worry about a skimmer at the office - I work in a high security building, where you have to pass through two key-card doors to get in and security prowls 24/7 and if you wear your key-card in an unauthorized location (like on your belt) they'll stop you and ask you to move it. We DO need "stinking badges," even visitors and guests.

ah yes, that would make sense.

On the other hand I work in a very open environment. anyone could wander in and does
