cornerofmadness: Angel in drag holding up cards (lostboy)

wasn't nearly as horrible as I was expecting. I almost missed it. I need to figure out what is wrong with my second alarm. I have two settings and #2 is for the earlier than usual mornings. I couldn't fall asleep and when I woke up I was tired and thinking I am NOT moving until the alarm goes off...Huh it's awful bright for it being before 7 AM. Oh fuck. The alarm was blinking but there was no sound. Helpful. It was 8 AM and I had less than a half hour to get ready and be there. I was 5 minutes late. Oh well.

I should remember that by far and large we're still mellow after summer break and no one has got full up on bitch like they have at the exit meeting in the spring. Mostly it was a visit from the Ohio Board of Reagents and our President to tell us all the changes in OH education and Obama's new, well meaning but ultimately punitive and doomed to failure educational changes. Obama wants to rate colleges on performance and graduation rates (as does the state of OH). Only one thing that will cause, the degradation of the level of education because if you pin all the money on that one thing, people WILL pass those who don't deserve it.

The OBR lady scared me with some graphics. I know I bad mouth Ohio often. I've lived here three different times, never liked any of them to be honest. I'm disturbed by these graphics from 2008. 15000 students entering middle school. only FIVE thousand graduate. that's a drop out of @10K students. WTF. Of that 5K, only about 3K enter college and less than 1,500 graduate. Between 50-60% of that 3K are college ready. See what I mean about Obama and OBR's idea of pinning all money on graduation? What can we do if we're getting that many students underprepared for school? It's rather obvious that we're failing them at the k-12 level. I have no idea how or why but it needs to change. The other graphic she had was on the recession and basically those with college educations have recovered to the point of 2008's level and grown. Without schooling, it has remained stagnated at 2008 levels. Yeah, school is important.

BUT it was a lot of free brain time to edit thru my novella. I came up with a lot of ideas when I was busy tuning out my fellow faculty who were whining only minimally.

However, to add to the stress, my program got picked for program review. Those in education know what I mean. For the rest, it's a hugely stressful time as the state comes in to make sure you're up to standards and basically pull everything apart. The fact that I'm a medical doctor and not a PhD can actually be an issue and there are 2 of us at my school. Just freaking great.

declutter day 111 item tossed -Thomas Kincaid light house why kept -My mother’s sister gave it to me. It’s pretty but I’m not a fan of Kincaid I kept it for her. why tossed -My aunt died nearly a decade ago. I’m going to give it to her daughter.

NOTE I did give it to my cousin, Val, and she cried. Both she and Mom asked me, 'did you notice the odor?' No, it was in the basement since 2000, did it smell like mold? No it smelled of Opium, my aunt's perfume. I have no idea how since it was in my apt for years before it went into a basement for more than a decade. I'd like to think it's happy being back with her daughter.

That's really sweet about the lighthouse.

I'm glad you're getting your novel done!

I'd love to see what the stats are in other states, too.

it is.

me too. Well novella. The novel still has its middle finger up. It's the final battle and they all say suck me.

IN was the same as OH (I could see it out to the side) THe south was worse

I'm not surprised about IN (or the South, for that matter). Disappointed? Oh, yes. Surprised? Not really.

Good luck with the novella.

Oooh... Got some chills with the lighthouse. Maybe your Aunty is happy the lighthouse is "home."

Sorry about the audit, hope it goes well for you. *huggles*

*sighs* We sooo are failing the students in K-12. I've been in a McDonalds where the register calculates the change & you would not believe how hard it was to explain to the cashier as well as the manager that I did not want 99 cents change & that if I gave them the penny I was looking for, they could give me a paper dollar. Bother were convinced it would make the drawer wrong if they did that. >.> I'm a cashier & I know it's not wrong, but hey, the machine said it was this & no changing it... Good luck with the next crop that comes in, cuz now that story about the test where they didn't know something they should have learned in 6th grade makes sense. ^^;

And great you had time to work on your novel! :D

stuff like that happens often in my family. I think my aunt is happy the lighthouse is home (Her daughter loves Thomas Kincaid)

thanks we'll need it

oh geez, yes I'm familiar with that same issue. Points to my icon. They are unprepared and unwilling to work for the most part so it's a bad situation.

thanks me too

Cool! Then it worked out for the best! :D

You're welcome!

*Snorts* LOVE your icon! Yeah... My brother's a manager at the local McDonald's & he makes the staff work. XD

You're welcome! :D

yes it did

The chapter of Saiyuki Reload this quote came from was hysterical.

Fast food is like the first time a lot of these kids are made to do something

*nods* Sad, isn't it?

*nods* it's a good one! I've got a few epis on dvd & I was buying it until they closed all the bookstores around here. >.> I don't buy a lot online, cuz I hate the shipping charges & I normally don't spend enough at one time to get free shipping. *sighs*

*nods*

I hear you. That's why it was worth the membership fee for books a million. It's always free shipping. I still prefer to pick things up in a brick and mortar. Sadly the reload didn't fully get translated into English language manga because of the severe health issues of the mangka and then tokyopop went belly up

Date: 2013-08-24 07:16 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kiramaru7.livejournal.com
*nods* We don't have any Books a Million here. They have them down in Florida, so I get to visit & buy stuff when I visit my granny :D

That is sad. That's what happened to Hetalia (TP closed), but Right Stuff, I believe, acquired the rights to publish it.

Date: 2013-08-24 07:21 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com
the closet booksamillion is over 80 miles BUT they're online with same prices as Amazon with no shipping if you're a member so it works out for me.

supposedly Tokyopop is back but I haven't seen anything from them. That's too bad about Hetalia. TP had a lot of very good titles. it was a shame piracy put them under

From: [identity profile] kiramaru7.livejournal.com
That's still closer than the one I know is to me. ;P

Yeah? I didn't know that. *nods* Yeah... I know, right?! Most of manga came from them. I don't mind reading online, as I eventually buy it, so the manga-ka & publishes do get their money. It's when peeps read & don't buy that hurts. *snorts* then again, I used to see tons of Asian kids reading manga in Borders & I wonder how many of them bought.

Date: 2013-08-24 07:32 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com
this is true

oh yeah a lot of people use Borders as a lending library. I did read some of the manga there just to see if I wanted to buy it or not but I didn't sit and read the whole thing like some.

I did read a few on line but I always bought them or found out I wouldn't want to buy it in the first place.

Date: 2013-08-24 07:36 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kiramaru7.livejournal.com
*nods* ;p

Yeah... I wouldn't read them there, I used to look through them & skim a bot, like I'd do with a novel to see if I'd enjoy reading it. Most of the time I knew what I wanted, since I was following scanlations online. There are a few titles I never found in English that I'm glad I can read online, but they also haven't been updated in YEARS. T.T It's the same with anime. I've watched titles online & bought what I liked & if I didn't like it, all I wasted was a about 1/2 hour of my time. XD

*nods*

From: [identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com
since it was such a far drive and at the time I had dial up so I would have read more there than online but yeah otherwise I do the same. Hulu has some interesting anime up. I wish Netflix would get some of it

*nods*

Yeah? I usually watch anime at Crunchyroll. I found a few I liked over there :D

I've watched some there but sometimes crunchyroll sets my antiviral program off and I can't open anything

pretty much but then again until 4 months ago I couldn't even view videos on line because Verizon's broadband couldn't handle it. SO glad I dumped them.

Date: 2013-08-24 10:37 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kiramaru7.livejournal.com
*nods* I remember that. We still have verizon & it works just fine.. Maybe it's the area you're in?

Date: 2013-08-25 03:06 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com
no doubt of that but for me, getting rid of them was the best thing ever. I've not had a single problem since other than in the first 2 weeks when the broadband went out but they fixed it fast rather than blame me like Verizon did every time something went wrong

Date: 2013-08-25 04:14 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kiramaru7.livejournal.com
That's good they fixed it & now it's working. It could be just poor customer service by you, which is bad for everyone.

Date: 2013-08-25 04:18 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com
the customer service is somewhere out west and was so bad I ended up calling in a reporting them to their superiors no less than 3 times

Date: 2013-08-25 04:25 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kiramaru7.livejournal.com
o.0 3 times is 2 times too many. ^^;

I know. My favorite is when the guy hung up on ME

Date: 2013-08-26 05:11 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kiramaru7.livejournal.com
XD I had a telemarketer do that to me after I insisted rather forcefully that they put me through to the manager. I know this a job that these people are hired to do & they probably deal with a lot of nasty people in the course of a day, but I do feel I should not be harassed in to getting a newspaper subscription but 3 different telemarketers for the same newspaper that all called within a an hour or two of each other. Especially after I told the first oen to put me on the do not call list. >.>

Date: 2013-08-26 05:14 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com
yeah that's just uncalled for. Verizon hung up on me when I told them the problem I was having and that it wasn't because of the 'trees' like he was insisting

Date: 2013-08-26 05:20 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kiramaru7.livejournal.com
That also wasn't nice. Sometimes I'm amazed at how some people manage to keep their jobs with attitudes like that.

Oh, don't worry -- if Obama wants it, the Republicans probably won't pass it, even if it were the greatest educational reform ever seen in history. I was reading an article about CORE, which is an ATTEMPT to improve K-12, but again -- Obama is for it, so it doesn't stand a chance. Plus Sequester pulls funding from anything that might be useful for education, and our Congress seems to be perfectly happy to keep people stupid (and the American people likewise seem perfectly happy being stupid). I see tons of articles on this every day.

It's scary for the future. Even the kids who ARE graduating are woefully unprepared not only for college, but for LIFE. This is what's breeding kids who decide to kill someone because "we're bored."

Date: 2013-08-25 03:05 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com
no the Republicans might pass it because it's SUCH a Republican idea, it'll reward the rich schools and destroy the small schools. It's a horrible idea. It deserves an early death so just for that it will probably succeed, much like no child left behind which is what caused MOST of the problems in k-12 now.

We're dumb enough without any help from congress

kids that kill or kids that think sex games and teen aged pregnancy are no big things. It's very common here to have kids with 4-5 kids before they're 20

Date: 2013-08-25 04:00 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wildrider.livejournal.com
Ah. Well, basically, if Obama is for anything, the Republicans are agin it, so maybe he's just pushing for it to make sure it fails. :P

We have guns, why should we need to be smart? /sarcasm

From: [identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com
so far whoever Obama is listening to for his education plan, they're idiots. Nothing he's put forth in all these years has made a whit of sense and luckily have not been put into play. Sadly this one HAS. Expect me to be without a job soon if it doesn't change
