Title -- Memories of the Unreal
Author-- [livejournal.com profile] cornerofmadness
Disclaimer -- Joss Whedon owns them. I just get to do some transformative play time.
Rating -- Teen
Characters/Pairing -- gen, Connor pov, very vague hints of Buffy/Angel, Buffy/Spike and attraction between Connor/Dawn
Timeline/Spoilers -- Post series/ no comics AR
Word Count -- 5,498
Warning -- nothing that couldn’t have been seen on the show
Summary -- Connor has finally found someone who knows what it’s like to have a head filled with fake memories.
Author’s Note -- Written for [livejournal.com profile] cya_ficathon 2012 for the prompt ‘I'd love fic about Wes/Lilah or Connor/Dawn. I'll enjoy anything about Wes/Lilah. I'd be interested in post-series Connor/Dawn and the issues surrounding having constructed memories’. This is the longest Whedonverse story I’ve done in ages. It is alternative reality, mostly because I don’t really know the comics well and I didn’t want to see half of Team Angel dead. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] evil_little_dog for the beta.

This turned into a momentous day. I was thinking it was going to be an awful day (and certainly the test I gave was awful and their attempts pathetic). I nearly didn’t have time to open my email but when I did I found out I was selected as the Madog Fellow for 2012-13! That’s right, I should be able to go and study in Wales this summer! WHEEE! I find out more tomorrow as I’m presented to the board and hear the current fellow’s (a good friend of mine) presentation. I'll be studying the Standing Stones.

In fact, I know she and our other friend, BB, would like me to go with them to Wales in July. There are drawbacks to this. It’s when I teach. We would have to avoid London at all costs because the day of their conference there is the opening of the Summer Olympics and thank you, no to that mess. I could give up my class this summer but the truth is where they need to be and where I would need to be are nowhere near each other so really other than if we were to get plane seats close together I see no real point.

So, my UK friends, I would like some help. Anyone know of any tours of the standing stones in Wales? I found one on line (I will be contacting travel agents naturally). I can find a jillion going to Stonehenge, naturally. At this moment, I honestly know nothing. I’m not even sure 100% what this entails and how much money I get. I know I would like to go to London (I do understand flying into Wales from here is not really much of a possibility) and see people there either before or after doing the Wales tour. However, they’re already raising the prices due to the Olympics. I might end up going to Manchester (which is where that one tour leaves from). All I know about Manchester is that’s where my two friends are most likely flying into before heading to Wales and that the people there have an accent which is one of the few I have ever had to struggle with. The other possibility is flying into Ireland and taking the ferry across.

Now I really MUST get my MRI on my arm and find out where I stand surgery wise. Mom says who gives a damn. You’ve had pain for a decade, go to Wales and don’t worry. Then she and Dad are thinking hey if you go in June that’s our anniversary. We could go too. I wouldn’t mind that in theory. It’s about the only way Mom’s getting anywhere.

This made up for the awful test and for the awful smell. Right before the second test, it started smelling like a sewer in my office. It steadily, quickly got worse. One of my students came in and asked about it. I said ‘bet Dr. A is dissecting road kill again in vertebrate Zoo.’ I take a good smell. Hmmm smells like wet dog and putrescence. I was close. Two road kill coyotes. Too bad I had a test. I would have liked to help with that dissection.

I got a very unexpected blog post on my rss feed today. I’ve only know this author briefly when he interviewed me as part of a platform challenge but he was a very active blogger and tweeter. I found him interesting, not only because he could write a good blog post, he had a point of view that I don’t often get an inside peek at. He’s an African-American man who grew up during the 60’s. Anyhow, he rolled up shop, deactivating everything, FB, twitter, the blog and giving up being a writer. I have to say it took me by surprise and I’m a little saddened by that. I'm trying to think of what would make me quit trying and I just don't know.

Adopt one today!

Today was my long day (well not as long as Wednesday but close). It's also the end of the year and students were everywhere and they would not go the hell away even after I posted up my new sign a friend made me with Gandalf and the words 'You Shall Not Pass.' As a result I couldn't make it to the gym to do a full work out.

So I rode that bike like the devil was after me because that's what I'm supposed to do, ride hard if I can't go long. Hustled over to the student research presentations. Only sat thru half before going to my friend's Welsh Fellowship presentation and i had to be there because they wanted to present me as the next fellow. My friend is something of [livejournal.com profile] bob_fish's American counterpart and her talk was on the troubles of having an independent Welsh film industry considering both world distribution issues and the emergence of a new Welsh identity seperate from English (and having an English controlled media).

People came up to me to tell me how excited they were by my idea. We can't wait to see your research. Yeah, me too. Gulp. Also I had no idea they were going to announce that my novel Machiavelli Moon was going to be part of my research. Yes I did stick that on the proposal to make myself look better since this is SO far out of my field of study. Whee. You know this makes me wish a) that I could do original art or afford to pay someone to do it for me so I could have a little portrait of Sulien and Caderyn to show this time next year and b) for me to get off my ass, finish editing and start marketing it again because what could be cooler than to have that story published?

I then jumped in my car and flew over to Athens because I had to pick up my world book night books. I also wanted to eat in my favorite Chinese restaurant, forgetting this was Friday in Athens. I got in in time but couldn't get out. There were people every damn place. I got to the Athens Book Center and they were putting out cookies and juice for all the book givers. I was the last to arrive but they waited to see if there were going to be more coming so I shopped around. I swear there was a bird nest in teh wall. I could hear the chirrping and I saw what looked like twigs poking through an area of drop ceiling.

Sadly, no one else came. There were just three of us. That was disappointing. I continued shopping after we put the books in the car and I hit the rest room. I didn't realize that the store had technically closed and they were just open for us (but who closes at 6 pm?) They weren't too sad since I shelled out 70$ in books including one I hope to go to see a presentation on Asylum on the HIll: History of a Healing Landscape about the Ridges (the asylum I've posted pictures of before). It was written by Katherine Ziff who teaches at Ohio University. The book had college text prices. yikes but it's my end of the year treat to myself a little early and it helped a local book store so...I got some o Ohio Hauntings too. The ladies were stunned that I came all the way from where I live to there, like I drove a 100 miles to get there. Oh right, round trip I DID.

I hit the Donkey bar for coffee. I should have brought more quarters for the parking and stayed for the music they were having. Oh well.

The cats aren't speaking to me. I've been putting in 12-14 hours away from home all week and they're like who are you?
