since I've been that uncomfortable in a store. I wanted to go to free comic book day because one of the offerings was Hellblazer written by Gaiman and drawn by Dave Kean (like I could have resisted that). The comic book I usually wander into wasn't open until 3 in the afternoon, the same time as Dracula so I went to a town I've never been in before, Waverly.

I wasn't sure I was going. I started getting sick last night and felt pretty bad this morning. Then I felt heartsick with the news of the synagogue shooting back in my home town area of Pittsburgh (I know that synagogue. And Trump's blame the victim response has made me infuriated.)

In the end, I did drag myself out the door. Waverly itself was neat looking, 1800s old and obviously always small town but it was in fairly good shape. The comic book store however, in spite of being in a nice old brick building was just awful. For one the smell of mildew could have knocked you out. That I could have forgiven. It was tiny. Even that I could have overlooked. I KNOW I was spoiled by Sci-Fi City in Orlando (and miss it terribly) but seriously if I opened up my crates of books and sold them out of my living room it would have smelled better, had more room and had more books.

I could put it down to 'they're small town and trying' but they aren't. The clerk didn't greet me. She just stared as if she couldn't figure out why I was in there. Yeah I was a new face but still. Okay a socially awkward comics geek, I know how that is...only she didn't seem to know comics either. I found one I was interested in but it was #2.

Do you have number one? She looked at me. Finally she looked at the book. I was beginning to wonder if she was brain dead or high on something. She says 'I don't think so' and went back to staring at me.

Um how many free comics can I have (which btw was the largest stash of comics in the place. There was a handful of new DC comics, several indie titles and zero Marvel).

One.

Okay some places allow one of each and there's no way they're gettting enough clientele through that door to give all those away (there was one other person in there but he never even glanced my way. I really wanted the Frankenstein freebie too but if I could only have one, Hellblazer it is. I took it, bought one indie comic and fled.

BTW have I mentioned this was 35 miles from my house. Yeah, so the Athens one I usually go to is five miles further but that's where I'm going back to next time.

Because it seems like they're revitalizing ALL of the DC/Vertigo Sandman universe titles. Just what I needed, collecting again.

From there I went back to Jackson to the Spot on Main for coffee and writing until Dracula started. Another 30s movie in our 1930s theater. I met up with one of my writers group there and she and her hubby was going to the movie too. Nice to get to talk to them.

Love the movie but I already knew that. I have to say I wanted Mina (and Elizabeth's from Frankenstein)'s dresses.

It was good to have a day off but I need to get a ton done tomorrow.

When I get to shops like that, I always tell myself they're secretly laundering money for criminal enterprises. It's the only logical explanation for why the customer service is so bad - they don't want customers.

It sounds like they made one heck of an effort to drive you off!

That does not sound like a great experience. (Especially not knowing if they had the first one in the series and not even bothering to check. That would've irked me.) You'd think she'd have been thrilled to have a customer!
