Snippet “Okay. That’s good right?” Grace glanced back to the room. “Him waking up like that? He’s scared.”

“And that tube has to hurt,” Alessia said. “But he’ll be okay.”

“I think he will.”
Amalia squeezed Dan’s hand. “It’ll be okay, pamangkin. Rest easy. The doctor will help you, just let the machine do its work.”

His eyes widened even more, breaking Alessia’s heart. She wanted to comfort him but she couldn’t’ imagine his pain, how afraid he had to be. The doctor and a couple nurses raced in, asking her to leave. One of the nurses had to peel his hand open so she could get free. Amalia caught her arm and walked with her out of the room.

Alessia sobbed once she was outside, hoping he didn’t hear her. Dan didn’t need her fear feeding into his. Grace yanked her close embracing her tightly. Amalia rubbed her back.

“It will be all right, my brave young ladies. Let’s go find Alon and Efrem and let them know Dan is awake.”

Alessia followed her in a fog. Later she barely remembered sitting in the cafeteria with the Abadianos and Grace. Finally, they were allowed back with a caution they couldn’t stay long. The medical staff had removed the horrible tube leaving Dan breathing on his own. He tried to lift his head when they came in but couldn’t’ manage it. It wasn’t until she and Grace were at his bedside that she realized his family didn’t come in, giving them a few minutes alone with Dan since they wouldn’t be allowed to stay as long as family could.
