Writerly Ways
Sep. 11th, 2022 09:40 pmI had a bit ready for this but grading took forever and now I'm tired and brain dead. I will leave you with this, authors tend to have to read their own stuff out loud at some point. I went to an indie local author's talk at the library. Her reading was...less than stellar. You can tell she's nervous in front of crowds.
You're an introvert? Yes that might be an issue. Doing these talks are considered a vital part of marketing and whether you're traditional or indie you're going to be expected to help in marketing. I've done reads. Yes they can be nerve wracking. They can be fun. They can make you go, why the hell did I not ever read this out loud BEFORE publishing because that sentence I just heard out loud is absolute shit?
Not all of us are good at doing voices (I'm not really) but what we do need to learn is how not to talk at 90 mph. It is one of those things you need to practice.
And while we're on this, a lot of indie/self pubbers want in on the audio book. There has been a lot said about this. Let me offer my own thoughts. Unless you're good at reading, I don't suggest doing it yourself. Many authors aren't good at this and a bad read isn't going to help matters. (Neil Gaiman is excellent at reading his. I'm jealous). You can hire people and just like with the cover art you can spend a little, you can spend a lot and it is overwhelming.
You can get out there and listen to samples such as by S.L. Albert (full disclosure, she's a friend of mine, just getting started so her prices are currently reasonable)
