Time is racing

I can't believe I'm leaving in 2 days. Faculty meeting Friday, class on monday. I have a ton of students this semester and almost a full year's worth of credit hours which is SO much work.

But that racing time spun my head today. I was talking about retirement a few days ago and people asked me when? If I wanted to go early, 4 years (I wouldn't) If I wanted to go at 67, nine years. But the reality is I probably can't retire until my 70s if at all.

So today I saw someone I went to med school with posting her retirement party and it brought up all that grief again, because grief is tidal. Today was a tsunami. Most of my medical school friends are retiring. Comfortably. Me, because of the bad bounce my life took, am saddled by more than half a million dollars in student debt (still), have not nearly enough for retirement, could barely afford rent let alone a house. Then you look who you graduated with having everything I should have had and it gets hard. Sigh.

But in happier veins, it's music Monday. Feel free to share with us. We're doing the alphabet and we're up to U and V, since they're hard letters. I'm only sharing the last 5 years but you can share whatever U and V songs you'd like.

It's funny, I only listened to Sirrus Alt Nation a few times last week and heard this song a half dozen times at least. And my friend JK sent it too. If you listen longer what sounds like a silly thing has darker, obsessive undertones. Also JK is so right, this looks like a bad Abercrombie and Fitch ad

I'm sorry about the retirement, it is not fair on you. People say 'you just have to work hard to succeed' but they never think about luck, accidents, other things out of our control affecting us. This attitude of 'you control your destiny' is mostly shite.

Yeah it never crossed my mind that a combative patient would strike me and sever the nerve in my hand and that Wisconsin's workers comp stuff was so stupid that hands don't COUNT.

I was a surgeon and they told me hands don't matter.

That is pathetic of the Wisconsin thing- of course surgeons' hands matter. Such stupidity of them, jeez.

I was thinking of the leg accident you had (I think that was you?) I didn't know about your hand as well. You have been through the wars, it is not fair you have to suffer even more.

Yeah the leg was me too. The hand injury was 25 years ago now. how I do not know? My life is flying by!

Ooh we are similar age! That's what I like about Dreamwidth- most people here are older and not teenagers etc. I joined Tumblr but it was like a foreign language as the people were all very young. I didn't stay long there!

Although my daughter is nearly 20! So I know I must be at least 15 years older than her😅
