Okay when did I become incapable of traveling by myself? For years I have done so. Is it age? Did my Mom hit 60+ and turn into a worrier. Did me edging in on 40 make me somehow incapable of rendering intelligent decisions.

Yes, I want to go on vacation. No, I don't have anyone to go with. Yes, most of my vacations in recent years I haven't been alone but none of my friends can go. They all have families or jobs or otherwise can't go. This has never been a problem before. Sigh.

You know, it's not exactly like I want to be entirely alone but hey, I adapt well. Mother is especially afraid because I want to go to Vegas. Well to be honest I'd rather make that trip with a group since it would be more fun. But apparently Mother thinks I'll be strolling the Strip at 3 AM in a microdress with a victimize me sign around my neck. I think she's forgotten who has worked in big cities before. I'm pretty sure I know how NOT to be stupid. Head desk.

So I looked up some Grayline tours of both Vegas and Seattle (since the one all woman's travel club I'm looking at does mostly oversea's trips. I guess I'll do that next year) since i'm not the 'take a cruise' kinda person. Mollified that I'll be with people most of the day (what? did she think I was going to go into the desert on my own around Vegas?) Mom looked up airfare. She even found one to Seattle with a lay over IN Vegas. We're going to look into that and see if I can extend the trip for two days in Vegas on the way back.

If she doesn't make me insane first.

I have a friend in Vegas. If I weren't in school, we'd love to meet you out there.

And W really wants to go to Seattle... [laugh]

I have just the perfect timing. Actually my friends in Lompoc CA are from Seattle. Maybe she'd like to meet me there

My mother is exactly the same, she seems to think it's a major accomplishment if I cross the street without getting myself killed.

I know. It's like hello I went to New Orleans alone several years back. That is NOT what I'd call a safe city and I used to work in NYC. Sheesh

If you're going to Vegas on Memorial Day weekend I'd consider meeting you out there. What the hey.

Your mom is being a worrywart though. I mean, you're a grown woman. You can take care of yourself.

I'm not sure I could get to Vegas that soon but i'll look at it.

Oh I know. God knows what might happen to me this time

I just looked up flights. Damn, impulse travel is expensive. On second thought, I'm probably better off seeing what my friends in VT are doing anyway. I'm just trying to think of alternate plans for Memorial Day, since mine have fell through due to recent...ah...events.

Do what I do. Don't tell your mother anything, and she can't worry about it.

that would have been a better plan but both her AND my brother looked up when I was done with school and have been after me for the complete itinerary until I work again. My brother is being a real pain. It's like i'll get home when I get home

What business of it is theirs, except when you may plan to visit them, or vice-versa? And if they want to visit you, you tell *them* what dates are good for you to choose from.

The entire family (aunts, uncles, cousins etc) all thing that any free time MUST be spent with the family. I'd rather spend it alone and this boggles everyone's mind.

Whereas, in my family, even when we're together in one house, we're all in separate rooms spending time alone!

Vegas is a great city for a woman alone. You can stay in a nice hotel (my personal favorite is New York New York, but the Monte Carlo is nice as well, and I've stayed in all of them), have a spa treatment, go to a nice dinner, see some shows, gamble, shop...all things that don't require a group.

I know what you mean about family wanting a detailed time line of everything you plan to do...mine was the same. And, like you, I prefer spending time alone. Do what makes you happy.

Whatever you do, have a wonderful summer.

thanks. That's what I said. I'm like Mom a) there are cameras EVERYWHERE in the casino. If something does happen, make sure it gets on America's Most Wanted. I love that show anyhow. B) I'm not a retard. I won't be staggering down the street drunk. I outgrew that about 10 years ago

The familystuff...this is why I AM considering a college in the Pittsburgh area, that way a visit can be a day thing rather than me coming and spending three weeks.

Like you I have travelled alone a lot, and there are definite advantages, one being that you don't have to plan anything at all. :-) I have walked away in the middle of many activities simply because I wasn't enjoying them and being alone had no-one to answer to. Plus you always end up meeting people anyway. Hee! I always find I get invited to dinner by couples. They think they are doing me a favour, when it's obvious that they are just sick of each others company by that time. ;-)

Enjoy Vegas, in any way you see fit.

that too. Now normally my adulthood friends and i enjoy the same activities so it hasn't been an issue but in high school I usually DID leave the group because my friends only wanted to lie around working on their tans. WTF we're in Washington D.C. SMITHSONIAN people...okay I was a geek

I like the Seattle trip with a layover in Vegas; It's the best of both worlds. They are such different places, and should offer a nice balance.

Meh, and your Mom is just being a Mom. Every time I've ever moved away, my mother would start getting the newspaper of the city I was in, cut out all of the burglary and rape stories and mail them to me with her bi-monthly care packages. So I'd get a box of vitamins, feminine hygiene, bandaids, corn bread and violent newspaper clippings. *chuckle*

snort, that's funny. Oddly enough it's ME who goes and looks for those news articles. I had one place I moved to, or was going to, outside of Madison and saw that while I could have gotten a two bedroom apt there for what I paid for mine in MIddleton, they had a lock on the front door and a DIFFERENT lock on the basement laundry so I asked how many people were attacked down there. They told me that they couldn't disclose that info. My reply, a) that's public information b) you told me all I need to know. I don't want the apt.
