but first off happy belated birthday to [livejournal.com profile] the_penumbra Sorry i missed it. Hope it was good.

Now, you body, okay stop being a fuck up. I'm ALLERGIC to my insulin. I'm swelling up whenever I use my long-acting insulin (the short term one is fine). THe doctor said 'that happens' sometimes with Levemir. Take some benadryl and when you get back i'll put you something else. Yeah because I wanna be doped up on benadryl drinking five gallons of water (that stuff dries me out) every day for a month. How about switching me to the other insulin NOW? head desk.

My mom had an allergic reaction to her first insulin 15-20 years ago. She got a red welt at the site but the doctor blamed her for doing something wrong. She finally went to a specialist in Chapel Hill. He took her off of "N" and put her on lentae or lintus (I get the two confused).

Well last year her prescription insurance supplier stopped carrying her insulin so her doctor (not same one from back then) changed it. Mom had forgotten the name of the one she was allergic to until the welts returned and she realized that she was taking "N" and that was the one. So now her doctor is giving her the other lentae/lentus and she had a rough time in the transition period but now her sugar is better than ever. Better being she is staying below 300 and sometimes below 200. Which I know sounds high but is great for her. She actually gets ill when it goes below 150 cause her normal is so high.

I think you may be onto something here. Tell your body to stop it. And yah... if your doctor thinks that's appropriate it's time to 'doctor shop' for one who is actually interested in healing you rather than just continuing to collect money from you. >_< I know that's a really cynical view... but I have seen it too many times not to believe that there is a real ethics problem... keep them just well enough to keep them coming back for their 'cures' but don't actually make them well enough that they don't need to be seen as often. It sucks.

[rant]My doctor tried to put me on lipitor, and when I asked her about the side effects I asked her very frankly, "do you mean to tell me you want to put me on a chemical that has the potential to destroy the ONLY organ in my body that regulates cholesterol NATURALLY?" and she just shrugged and said "well... yah..." I mean she was actually almost meek about being called on it. Lipitor at the time was the brand new darling of the pharm companies... I told my doctor "I don't think so." She's not my doctor any more. I didn't like being treated so arbitrarily, since my cholesterol wasn't that high, I was barely into my 30's and she wanted to put me on a chemical for the REST OF MY LIFE without even giving me a proper chance to try and correct it through diet. DUHR? [/rant]

he doesn't want to switch me without seeing me which is proper procedure. He forgets i AM a medical doctor and can monitor myself and let him know if there's a problem

Yah.. I can see that, however if you're having a reaction, then why would he not want you to come in NOW so he can correct this... Seems to me that seeing you first is proper medical procedure. Seeing you immediately because you are having a drug reaction, is proper. Having you wait, and suffer until next month and telling you to take another chemical without seeing you seems to me to be unethical. What's the difference if it's one chemical or the other.. he's making a recommendation over the phone anyway, without seeing you or seeing what is going on. >_< I thought anyone ought to realize that a mild allergic reaction can become a very serious reaction very quickly... especially with chemicals, ne? Am I wrong to feel that way?

i'm three states away and told him i wasn't coming in that's why. I'm not going back for something like this which i made sure he knew in no uncertain terms. I'm more than capable of handling it. I just wanted him to know what was going on. This probably isn't a true allergic reaction. It's apparently a side effect of this particular brand of insulin

Let me see: you're a diabetic who's allergic to insulin. I think we have all the proof we need that the Universe hates you.

I'm so sorry.

yeah. Apparently that's not too uncommon with this particular prep of insulin. I've told him once it acted like a mosquito bite but it usually subsides in five minutes, now it's hanging out for days

Okay, interesting. I guess it's not exactly the same as the insulin normal bodies produce then.

Well that sucks. *comfort*

no, no, it's doctored to be long lasting. my humalog, the short acting insulin would be more like normal insulin

Now that really sucks. It's like they're saying," Oh yeah, let's dope her up! She'll be more fun that way." *head/wall*

Allergic to your insulin? WHOA! How weird. I don't think I could ever take Benadryl that long either. I mean, hell, I'm barely conscious most of the time. If I took Benadryl every day, I'd never wake up.

it doesn't really do much to me other than dry me out but i still don't want to do it. I think the allergy is probably to one of the things that make this 'long acting' as opposed to the actualy insulin but still
