It's Cho Hakkai's birthday (and how is it we can remember fictional characters birthdays but forget our friends...). I'm like 95% sure I've never posted this since it's not in memories or any of the other usually places... edited it and let it slip my mind. Enjoy

Summary – Ever have a bad dream?
Time Line – not tremendously important story wise but does contain spoilers for Reload #6 for Hakkai’s plans for his future.

Author’s Note – dedicated to anyone who’s ever been ticked off at someone for something they did in their dreams. This grew straight out of the conversation Hakkai and Gojyo had about their futures in Reload #6. Thanks to

Hakkai sniffed as he entered his home, the air rich with spices and herbs Mouth watering, he had to swallow before calling cheerily, “Sweetheart, I’m home!”

Shyama, his wife, came out of the kitchen. He smiled. She was everything he ever wanted. Hakkai folded her in his arms, burying his face in her thick raven hair, now shot through – much like his own – with silver.

“What have you been up to, you bad man?” She grinned after he kissed her.

”Hiding from all our children.”

She swatted him. “You work in a school. There is no hiding from children for you.”

Hakkai grimaced. “So true.”

“Why don’t you round up our brood? It’s nearly dinner time,” Shyama said.

Hakkai complied happily. This was his favorite time of the day, being in the warmth of his home, his beautiful wife at his side and surrounded by their children. Even when the kids were being ornery, he still loved being with them. Shyama was quick to blame Uncles Gojyo, Genjyo and Goku for all the bad things the kids tried. Hakkai didn’t mind their little rebellions too much. He liked his children’s independent spirits.

Better even than dinner time were the times afterwards, curling up on the couch with Shyama, looking forward to his off days when he could lounge at home. Shyama would boss him around just the way he liked it and the kids would make an ungodly racket.

The night frittered away, playing with the younger kids, checking the older kids’ homework, reading and dozing a bit as his wife knit.

“Hakkai.” She shook him into full wakefulness.

“Yes, dear?”

“It’s time for bed. Has Maya come in?”

Hakkai stretched. “I’ll go check.”

“She was out with her boyfriend.” Shyama wrinkled her pert nose.

“Kishan? He’s a nice boy.”

“She broke up with him. She hasn’t told me who the new boy is,” Shyama replied.

“Ah. I can’t keep up any more. Wasn’t she in pig tails yesterday?” Hakkai lamented.

“I wish.”

Hakkai grinned and went upstairs. He tucked in the smaller children and did notice his eldest daughter wasn’t in her room. Coming back downstairs, Hakkai kissed his wife. “I’ll go look for Maya.”

He headed outside. He didn’t want to interfere with his daughter but there was a curfew and he needed to enforce it. “Maya!” he called and he heard a rustling near the flower bed and hushed words. He went to look for the source. Hakkai’s jaw dropped when he saw his precious little girl, naked, in a very intimate embrace with “Uncle Gojyo.” Hakkai’s eyes widened, his teeth clenching as he gathered his chi for a blast.

Gojyo threw his hands up. “I can explain!”

“No, you can’t!” Hakkai barely stopped himself when Maya flung herself between him and Gojyo.

“No, daddy! I love him!”

At her sharp plea, Hakkai woke up with a gasp. He sat up and looked around their cramped hotel room. Gojyo was curled up on his side in Hakkai’s bed while Goku sprawled all over Sanzo, snoring the roof tiles off, in the other. Damn the no-room-but-this-one hotel situation. Hakkai grabbed his pillow and swatted Gojyo hard.

The kappa woke up with a grunt. “Wha? Why’re you hitting me?” he slurred, still more asleep than awake.

“I’m furious with what you did!” Hakkai snapped, getting up.

”I was sleeping.”

“What you did in my dream, damn you,” Hakkai clarified, shocking Gojyo with the expletive. He stalked into the bathroom but not before casting an irritated look over his shoulder at Gojyo.

“In a dream? What the hell, Hakkai?” Gojyo rubbed his abused head. How could he be in trouble with someone over a dream? What the hell could he have done?

Irritated, Gojyo got up and saw the dirty priest and the monkey were still out cold. Sanzo probably couldn’t hear through Goku’s snoring. The monkey was upside down on the bed, head to the foot. This was why he hated sharing with the chimp. Goku’s heel was close to some place sensitive as he sprawled on Sanzo. Gojyo shrugged. If he was going to get yelled at, he might as well make it for something he had actually done.

Gojyo leaned over and tickled the monkey’s nose with the ends of his hair. Goku groaned and swatted but didn’t wake up. A few more tickles and the boy kicked. Sanzo sat up, howling. Curling up, the priest didn’t even have the breath left to fan Goku. Gojyo smirked and went to find his cigarettes.

What a way to start the day.
