my bad hand is killing me. It's swollen and bruised looking but I didn't hit it. I must have overused it on Sunday.I can hardly move it and today is cat diseccting day. Some help i'll be.

also very weird dream again. This time I was walking along inside this amusement park 'ride' in a bathing suit. it was an Indiana Jones like experience and there were these teen boys with me. Finally we break through after being lost in it to this museum like part where we surprise a janitor. Apparently the ride wasn't open yet and we had gotten in somehow and gone through backwards (channeling the haunted house customers i guess) and I scooted out the front door before he decided we had to pay anyhow. Then I went along the walkway where aa water ride mat was thrust into my hand and someone shoved me into the water ride tubes b ut the only people going thru were three teen idols ala Miley Cyrus and I got washed along with them...

and an OMG this fucking hurts. Nerve pain is well just painful. The nerve in my hand is just firing over and over making the muscles jump. I can barely hold on and it's like a throbbing toothache from thumb nail to the side of my face. I put the thumb in its brace so it's a bit better but still.

I just moved past a very apropos paragraph in the mystery I'm reading that really fits today. Don't be naive, Colin. No god and no religion - not Apollo, not Isis, not the god of the Christians - has ever turned politicians into decent human beings, or ever could . Merlin - The Lancelot Murders (which so far isn't as good as the first)

Yeah, election day, I only trotted out because there were a few statewide things I wanted to weigh in on and the fact that 911 might disappear in my area without a bit more tax money...

TV babble - I love Castle for many reasons even if it's cheesy but the real reason I love it is I actually believe him as a father. He is a really interesting and to my mind, positive father figure. Yes, Hollywood has done single dad stories a lot but they rarely do them well. Here, I think they've got it.

This morning getting ready I was watching V, the original V. Oh dear sweet mother how cheesy was this? How much did I love it? Duncan Regehr (the bad guy alien) walking around with his shirt opened to his navel to show off those pecs while everyone else is in a red skintight jumpsuit with big black diamonds pointing to their crotch in that look at me way. (and yes I loved Duncan in Wizards and Warriors , talk about cheesy!) Oh that 80's hair. I remember that hair. I HAD that hair and I thought it was so cool. Boy...i was wrong.

Speaking of V, i should have watched the premiere (the parents were not impressed) but I chose to go Hulu it sometime and watch my usual show. Speaking of which...

since I'm stalled. So where did this come from?

1. I love mysteries and steampunk is interesting (though admittedly most of what I've read has been bad so if you have recs of things you liked feel free)

2. very obviously there is an FMA influence but more on that in a bit

3. I've had to perform a lot of amputations in my career. I've watched people struggle to regain independance. With my diabetes, one day that could be me. So i've been watching the new robotic limbs with interest (note, I've had other amputee characters over the years as well) and thought what if science hadn't been held back in medicine so long and this ability arrived much earlier?

4. it was written as a short story for a steampunk anthology then I never turned it in seeing they didn't take 'death' in a story and well, it's a mystery so... Besides, as often as I try them, I'm not convinced short story and mystery go together, at least not in my hands.

5. back to the FMA influence. I don't deny the obvious but other than some superficial personality traits (and mostly because i loved those dynamics while playing with them in fanfic) there isn't much resemblance to FMA. The character who'll most closely resemble his inspiration will be Julian Longstaff who would be Al if you mixed Al with Niles Krane. Placid is hot tempered as is Melantha but nothing like Ed or Winry.

Also they're older and have completely different angst going on since well not the same story obviously. Placid will allow me to play with the body dysmorphism a bit. Ed does want his limbs back but he never dwells on it. Placid is. It's inhibited his life in certain aspects (mostly social/sexual). Declan bears no resemblance to Hohenheim. Killingsworth needs to tell me his first name (and Reanne her last...) is in a different place of power over Placid than the mirroring relationship in its inspiration.

Also, I think Melantha might need a new last name. I just realized I have Dr. Honeycutt and Captain Burns in the same story (glad I didn't call Ophelia Major Burns....) Ophelia likes Burns so Mel might have to be renamed.

For those who care about that sort of thing, all the place names are towns in Pennsylvania
