I headed to Marietta for the flashlight tour and paranormal investigation after work on friday. The microtel I found out by the highway (well literally a half dozen or more hotels are out there mostly for Marietta College) was surprisingly nice. It had an energy saving measure I've never seen but would love to see everywhere in hotels. You need your hotel key in a slot on the wall to turn on the lights so people can't leave the room and leave the lights on, wasting energy. It also had a window seat that was a basically a cot (and comfortable too). I think I was just as happy not to be at the Lafayette this time because that would have been Halloween drunk central.

The Anchorage )

Blennerhassett Island )

My biggest disappointment was the t-shirts at the Anchorage were ALL smalls (well it is end of year) because I needed the one that said ghost hunters do it in the dark with battery-operated toys. I came home to find my belated birthday gift from [personal profile] silvrethorn, a towel that said does this towel smell like cholorform to you and a lovely gold gilt tea cup that says you've been poisoned at the bottom. Maybe you'll get to see pics some day

I forgot for a week to ask my questions of the ghost hunt in Marietta tomorrow. At least the confirmation email answered one of them and I can ask the other before the hunt begins (i.e. are we going up stairs and is there a hand rail. if there is I can leave my cane behind.)

I feel relative ready for tomorrow. I packed the suitcase. I have three flashlights for this tour. I powered up my camera and my phone (and my ereader which is starting to burn batteries like today where it went from 30% charge to no charge in 20 minutes) I have a light backpack for the ghost hunt so my hands are free.

AAAAAAAAAAAAND because my brain is awesome I don't remember which hotel I made a reservation for. I think it's the microtel. But also there is no confirmation email or text. Um...that sucks. I'm going to have to log into my credit card or something but more likely I'm just calling the damn microtel tomorrow morning. Why is there no email?? Why can't I remember? Why I am so awesome?

If all goes well I'll head out to Blennerhassett Island on Saturday once I get up. I haven't bought tickets (at least I remember that much) because I wasn't sure how I'd feel after the ghost hunt all night nor what the weather will be. If it's sold out, c'est la vie. I would like to finally see it. I hate it's history but it's fascinating none the less. Blennerhassett if you don't know (and I didn't until recently) tried to overthrow the English king, fled from Ireland to here, married his niece, picked this island in West Virginia's river because it was technically Virginia then because he wanted to own/run slaves and then sided with Aaron Burr tried to set themselves up a king here. So he was a sweetheart....

Kent State uni thinks I'm an alumnus because they bought my medical school after I graduated. I had to look up where they even were in OH because all I knew about them was what everyone knows, the May 6th shooting back in the Viet Nam days. Well they invited me to a true crime talk by one of their actual alumni so I said yes and watched it on vimeo and barring the sound quality it was good.

When I went to watch the latest Doctor Who episode I saw I had NOT finished the Flux series from nearly a year ago. Mostly because it was so fucking boring and I really really REALLY dislike Jodi Whittaker. (not just in Who, I hated her in Broadchurch too) I don't say that often as I know a lot of my friends like her and that's fine. She's not for me. Anyhow I was bored with this episode too and suddenly it had my interest when it made the Doctor NOT from Gallifrey and totally fucked canon. So I thought well you don't know the 20th cen Docs maybe it was that way and you just don't know so I asked my friends who are uber fans and was brought up to date on how pissed off fans were by this. Sigh. Of course now that Disney + took over Who (and literally everything else) I won't have to worry any more because I wont' get to see the new Who which is upsetting. I wanted to see him. I'm utterly disappointed in this turn of events.

I just realized I copy and pasted this magazine's template into the email and FORGOT to change the title of the story in the header to MY title and now it's there in all the emails about it. I am SO embarrassed. My brain is AWESOME.

And got worse. At 6 AM I woke up, had to pee and went back to bed because my day starts later than most. At 6:17 my old clock radio turned on. It's old (like 20+ years) and that button is stiff. I have no idea how or WHY it turned on (my alarm is an actual alarm and set for 8). I'm like do I need a Boo Buddy for my bedroom?

I got to work and found out the mouse that ate the tea in my desk drawer took the long weekend to SHIT all over my desk. OMG the mouse trap is going to work. I got stuck at work forever because crap happens. I come home and decide maybe I should look as to why Rocket won't sleep in his bed any more outside. He's storing dead mice in there OMFG, bless his little heart, he's just not that bright.

And let's keep the strong potentially controversial opinions rolling. Let's talk about things you don't like in your favorite genres or at least things that get on your nerves (keeping in mind YMMV) I love mysteries. Cozy is one of my less faves but I read a fair number of them because they're everywhere and the library has scads. I don't buy many but when I do I ALWAYS manage to get one I don't like. Go me.

For me, what bugs me about cozies is if the amateur sleuth doesn't get along with the police. I'm fine if the amateur has a good relationship with the police (platonic or otherwise) like Jessica Fletcher but if the police is always going 'you interfere I'm arresting you for it' and the sleuth shows them up anyhow. I'm like why didn't they arrest her because?!? If half your drama comes from the cops threatening your sleuth I don't need your book.

This rant was brought to you from the historical piece of crap I'm reading now. I usually won't finish something I don't like unless I paid full price for it (and it fits the popsugar challenge too)

This is my fifth crown but the first to actually HURT. Boy this is bad.

My friend P is a nautralist at Ash cave and he was doing a ghost tour there tonight. If you want to know more about this you can click here

Work was quiet. All I did was sit and write while they took their bone practicums (I'll have to grade them). And hey I Nearly finished spook_me (which I hope to finish tonight)

Unfortunately I started feeling awful again tonight but I still dragged myself out of the apartment to Arch and Eddies for dinner (since I wouldn't have much time to cook). Sadly they took off the French onion soup. I got the chicken tender appetizer at the bar and a couple next to me after also locals and regulars and they were getting the bartender to experiment with drinks off a website but the wife couldn't drink them all. They kept asking ME to help them. SO here I am drinking with strangers (this is how you end up chained in someone's basement). And the weirdo who stared at me when I was there with my brother was there again! This time he didn't stare.

From there I went out to the cave. A friend was supposed to meet me there. I'm not sure she ever made it but if she did, I didn't see her (there were a lot of people there). I did meet a former and want to be again student, an adult learner who glommed onto me and never stopped talking. That was fine with me. I don't mind talking to people.

P got the group together and started on the stories. He is a natural story teller. He and his wife have been ghost hunting for a long time. She maintains the website Haunted Hocking and she's written a lot of books.

It was a fun experience walking back to the cave in the dark. He had a few cosplayers for the ghosts along the way which was fun too. he mentioned two things not on the website.
1. it's the deepest recessed cave east of the Mississipi

2. nine bodies are under the cave area (I have to ask him more about this. I didn't want to tonight because there were people from like 5 different states out there for the ghost stories and the halloween camping fest. I left them to ask questions. I can always talk to Pat).

He also proved to be an excellent owl caller but inadvertently started a territory fight between two great horned owls which was pretty amusing (to us, not the owls)

It was a very nice night. And I got to drive at night on lonely, curvy country roads. I LOVE that but know soon age will rob me of that but until then, music cranked, windows open, cold air blowing in and I just DRIVE.

Today started off very wrong footed. I get to the gym for the college fair and ask the ladies running it, where should I set up. We're over at the back by the bleachers, just look for the department name tag. I'm over there looking and there ISN'T one. They come racing over to me and says 'You didn't RSVP, you can't be here.'

I whipped around and said I've RSVPed because how the hell else did my dean and chair know I was coming. Well we didn't get it. I'm not leaving people so adjust. B.S. from the business dept says share my table. The coordinators are like no. hey go over there. WHERE? you mean that one lonely table off i n the corner? There are TWO DOZEN Universities here and you're telling me you don't want the home team SCIENCE DEPT, you know the place all the pre-meds want, to be here. I'm sitting HERE next to business. You better find me a chair.

I put all my models all over that table. I'm not going anywhere bitches. They brought my chair. Our new president and the provost stop at my table, shake my hand (our new president was an OH representative) THey ask, Dana, where's your sign for your department? They told me I didn't RSVP. THe provost wasn't amused because he knows that science (especially our chair) are some of the most involved and responsive group. He also knows we're always getting excluded.

And honestly I should have just packed up and gone home. No one stopped to talk to me except one really strange young man (and that's ME saying it). He raced up to me and I was all excited that someone wanted to talk science but no, he's a gem freak and I was wearing a black opal ring and a large moonstone pendant. He was FASCINATED by them. SO here I am talking jewelry with this kid. (who asked me to draw him a map to the renn fest where I got them both) but that's not the weird part.

He pulls out of his pocket packets of gems he's purchased online and proceeds to show me all of them and ramble endlessly. He was over the moon when I recognized the piece of green obsidian and spoke of the Aztec heart-harvesting use of them. He is hugely excited by Mesoamerican and south American indigenous historical tribes and out of his pocket comes a folded piece of paper covered in Nasca line representations and he starts in on them.

He didn't leave me alone until they called his school to start the tour. He needs to go into a story somewhere.

Afterwards I went to Jackson and to the Spot on Main my coffee shop hang out and tried a piece of Salted Maple Pie mostly because I never had it. I liked the crust because it reminded me of Grandma's and it was like pecan pie, good but now that I've had it, I don't need more (Pie is my weakness) But I had a tad too much coffee today which upset my stomach.

So by the time I met my friend TH for dinner at the smokehouse (because L wasn't there, she's a vegetarian and I'm sure not a single veggie is served here, oh there's taters and salad....smothered in meat). He loved it but I could b arely eat because my tummy hurt.

From there we went to heard James A Willis do a ghost of Ohio talk. I thought it would be an hour but it was two and he's a great speaker. Better yet, he's looking for ghost hunting volunteers. Crosses fingers I get accepted onto the team!! He had some techniques I've not seen before but would be perfect for my novel These Haunted Hills

Speaking of ghost hunting, I'm not doing the one in Marietta, sold out but that's okay with me too.
